Crystal Bowersox Knockout in Top 2 Contest for American Idol Season 9 Winner

Valerie Ferrari
It was their last chance to strut their stuff and show why one of them should win American Idol, Season 9. Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze tossed a coin to see who would sing first. Lee DeWyze lost. In addition to the "Curse of Going First," Lee had the additional burden of being Simon Cowell's pick for the winner. Each contestant was singing three songs. This is the last show of the contest and this was supposed to be the most exciting evening so that this could be my most exciting review, but, alas, it simply wasn't.

In my opinion, Crystal Bowersox mopped the floor of the Nokia Theatre with Lee DeWyze and all the judges' excuses and props for Lee (and there were more excuses than props) could not disguise the fact that he is not this season's American Idol. Crystal Bowersox is.

Lee's three songs were "The Boxer" from Inspirational Songs Week, "Everybody Hurts" which was picked by the executive producers, and the song that he will release if he is the winner: "Beautiful Day." He was given mixed reviews for his first two performances and the last song was given the best reception.

Crystal's three songs were "Bobby McGee" from Billboard No. 1 Week, producers' pick "Black Velvet" with Crystal dressed to match the song, and the song she will release if she is the winner: "Up to the Mountain." She nailed every single one of her songs but the last song was exceptional.

Of course, we can't completely count Lee DeWyze out yet, because he still has a shot with the voters. But if he wins, I think even he will know Crystal really earned the title.

Tonight was Simon's last night as a judge on American Idol and he talked about it on The Ellen DeGeneres Show earlier in the day, when he was predicting that Lee will win. He may be revising that after tonight's show.

Just can't see how Lee wanting to win more than Crystal had anything to do with his winning, besides in this particular show, she gave it 100% and Lee did not. In fact, he sucked compared to her. Nope, his getting more votes had about as much to do with wanting to win as it did with being the best singer. :-)

I think Crystal is an amazing singer, but she didn't seem to really want to win the way Lee did. I think that after it was publicized she was going to leave and Ryan convinced her to stay in the competition a month or so ago, we all realized her heart wasn't in it. It didn't seem like she wanted anything more in her life than she already had, and the viewers picked up that attitude. Anyway, they are both great performers and will probably do well in the music industry, win or lose.

LOL Christine - I thought the "Black Velvet" outfit was better than the hippie get-up she had on for Bobby McGee

Personally I thought "Black Velvet" was awful, including her outfit. She really did much better tonight than in the previous weeks, and I think Lee had a bad case of nerves. I think Crystal will win, but will she? Or will she be doomed by the curse of winning Idol?

Crystal is amazing, especially the fact that she is such a talented writer as well as singer. She deserves this...she's paid her dues, she has what it takes and I look forward to her bringing some rockin'soul back to music. I've been hoping for awhile that a female with that kind of depth and artistry would finally win Idol. I hope America gets it right and votes her to win.

@Mark - wow, I don't even think there will be much to say if she loses.

I look forward to your review after the winner is announced. I especially will look forward to it if Crystal somehow loses. :-)
