Crystal Skulls & Their Ancient Healing Powers

Melissa B
The world is full of mysteries that baffle observers and scientists alike. Many of which are awe inspiring, and theory raising.

One of these perhaps ancient mysteries are the 'crystal' skulls. Few artifacts have raised the theories around them such as these skulls. Theories that carry on today in modern society.

These crystal skulls are believed to be discovered at least by the early 1900's. Scientists are unsure of the exact date of some of these skulls' origins, but they are believed to be hundreds, if not thousands of years old.

There are supposedly thirteen (a number which some people attribute significance to) skulls in existence, only a few of which are actually known of though. Each skull is of varying quality, and material. All of the skulls are made of precious, or semi-precious stones.

The skull has long been a symbol of death, significant in almost every culture across the world. Some experts in ancient culture though believe that these ancients believed the soul was housed in the head (skull), so it was a sign of life, and of a soul. These particular skulls are supposed posses healing or even magical powers, probably due to the latter belief. Neither of which have been proved.

However, many people today still believe in the power of these skulls. Some even say that if all thirteen of the skulls were put together, the secrets of the world would be revealed.

An interesting fact about these crystal skulls is the carving themselves. They are carved 'against the grain' of the crystal, and by all rights should not hold together, should crack, and break apart.

The skulls vary in size, and detail. Some are just 'surface' carved, and others are rather detailed (not to mention life size) carvings (angelslove). The intricacy and effort that would have been needed in order to make such a work of art, such carvings would indeed have been considerable!

The skulls that are known to us are the Mitchell Hedges Crystal skull. Which was reputedly found by the daughter of 'Mike' Mitchell-Hedges, Anna. Which is the most famous of the skulls.

When Anna found the 11 pound skull, she was allegedly traveling with her father on a trip to a Maya city in Belize (where they thought they would find Atlantis' ruins) when she found the skull in the ruins back in 1924 or 1927. It was later proven though that Mitchell-Hedges bought the skull at a sale in 1943, although Anna maintained the story until her death (skepdic). There are other skulls as well, one called 'Max,' allegedly given to people of Guatemala, by a Tibetan healer.

There are also the British and Paris skulls which were allegedly found in Mexico in the late 19th by mercenaries. People suspect that one may be the model for the other.

There are also the Mayan and Amethyst skull, supposedly found in Guatemala, early this century, around 1949 (skepdic).

There is no doubt that these skulls are in fact mysterious, magic powers aside, they are another great example of the beauty, and mystery of our history.
