Cuba's Province of Pinar Del Rio

A Time Capsule

Jane Sixto
Cuba: a time capsule only 90 miles away.

Something they don't teach in Cuba is that 50 years ago Cuba only had six provinces.

West to east they were Pinar del Rio, Havana, Matanzas, Santa Clara , Camaguey, and Oriente. I have visited them all and lived in a few of them.

Travel to Pinar del Rio by automobile, the preferred method for it allows you to wander and explore. Take snacks, water, toilet paper and hand sanitizer with you as you may not find any where you are going.. Pinar del Rio has a few hotels. None of them have stars however adventure abounds. Reservations are not necessary in the City of Pinar del Rio because tourism is at a minimum also I recommend staying nearby in Vinales there are quite a few bed and breakfasts there. Before you check in inspect. Be sure to inspect the bathroom facilities for running water electric etc. these are not givens anywhere other than the tourist resorts and hotels. Things to see nearby include Soroa Water falls and gardens, the guayabita factory where they make guayabita liquor. Any of the tobacco factories , The tobacco fields and (guano) drying houses.

Near vinales there are quite a few caves, all of them commercialized however worth the time to see. Take the time to drive west to Minas de Matahambre. In its prime, the Minas de Matahambre had the purest copper in the world. The mine shafts are still standing; there is a little museum in a house on First Street. Drive through town heading west to Santa Lucia and drive to Cayo Jutia where the steel lighthouse that was built during the Military government of General Leonard Woods, illuminates a beautiful isolated beach. General Leonard Woods was instrumental in the building of the Malecon in Havana.
