Cubical Wars

Tales from the Front Lines of the Office Wars Day 5

Rissa Watkins
Friday, day five - I arrive at the office a little battered and bruised, but still hanging tough. I see Jim come in and nod a hello before he is rushing back to his cube. After surviving another week he is no longer wet behind the ears, he knows the score. I get to my desk and there it is The Lifesucker has struck again.

She has sent a barrage of emails ccing everyone in the office and including everyone in her replies. I don't need to know every detail of how this project that doesn't affect me works. The bad thing is you have to read them in the rare case the information is pertinent to your job. Yes, it is a pain and it's boring but the worst is yet to come.

The midmorning meeting is where the true danger lurks. She is the one asking all the inane questions over and over turning what should be a 20 minute meeting into an hour long trial of endurance. This is no joke. It is a brutal battle of wills that will leave you willing to gnaw your own leg off for a chance at escape. Sadly we lose a lot of good people that way. The only good defense is to hide in the back with your cell phone, keep your head down and text as fast as your thumbs will allow. Make lunch plans, chat with your spouse, reconnect with your best friend from grade school- whatever you do keep those thumbs moving and you will get through this. I emerge from the trenches victorious with a blister, a grim smile and lunch plans.

I try not to make eye contact with Cindy as we proceed with our covert operation- lunch. I am almost out the door when I hear the Lifesucker's last charge "where are you going? Out for lunch? Can I come?" I immediately reply, "Oh sorry going to the bank." Never breaking stride for the door. I hear Cindy say a few feet behind me, "got to go home and let the dogs out." Oh, good one, I will have to file that away for future use. Cindy and I will meet up at the restaurant, plan strategy and warn each other about the latest snares and traps. The war will rage on but it's been a good week. I have had some wins and some losses. There were a few casualties but over all I feel victorious.

my office is small so we don't have it quite to this scale, but seeing the same people over and over can get really annoying! great job with these! very fun to read!
