Cubs Continue to Spiral Downward

Gary Davis

The Chicago Cubs lost again Tuesday. This time it was to the Milwaukee Brewers -- again. Things are sad in Chicago. It's getting hard to watch the Cubs play even for the sake of the sport.

Since the Cubs are trailing Milwaukee by 23 games there is little hope of overtaking them since there are just seven games left. If you detect sarcasm in my voice, you have me pegged.

It is a sorry situation when game after game the article has to focus on one player. Here it is again.

Starlin Castro is looking to break the record of hits set by Glen Beckert, who had 335 hits in 1965-66. Castro has to get three hits in his last home game.

Milwaukee was red-hot but has cooled down a bit. The St. Louis Cardinals are trailing them by 5 ½ games. The Brewers' "magic number" is three.

In the game the Brewers were able to score five runs and take the Cubs down. That's certainly easy to explain. A team plays well and it wins.

It's not so easy when talking about the Cubs. Again, the only positive was Castro's homer. Other comments are annoying. As MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports, Nyjer Morgan "…singled and then stole second moving to third on a Geovany Soto throwing error…"

Losing Cubs pitcher Randy Wells blamed himself for some errors, indicating he was "stubborn."

Aramis Ramirez, third baseman, appears to be leaving the team to go into free agency. The Cubs have made no move to keep him and yet he is hitting the ball as well as any Cubs player. Supposedly it is because they have no general manager. It seems to me a team makes changes like that after a season.

Somehow the Cubs have been able to handle Carlos Zambrano's problems: a player who just walked out.

The Chicago Cubs are a team in shambles and they have been for sometime. They will remain that way until the fans stop coming to the ballpark.
