Gruesome Sports Injuries in History

Gruesome sports injuries are never a pretty sight. Whenever gruesome sports injuries have occurred throughout history, the horror has been shared by the sports heroes and fans alike.

Recently, rookie Chicago Cubs outfielder Tyler Colvin was impaled by a splintered bat during a Cubs game on Sept. 19, 2010. Colvin suffered the season-ending injury just days ago in Florida when the Cubs took on the Florida Marlins. The 25-year old is in stable condition at the Jackson Memorial Hospital. The bat that impaled the rookie came within inches of his heart. Fortunately, Colvin is expected to make a full recovery. See the video here.

Other shocking and horrific sports injuries that still stick in the minds of fans and teammates include figure skater Jessica Dube, Moises Alou of the Montreal Expos, and Borje Salming of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In 1993, rising MLB star Moises Alou experienced a shattered fibula during play for the Expos. He also suffered a dislocated ankle that forced him to run with his foot dangling at the side of his leg. The injury may not have slowed Alou down entirely, but it did leave the crowds of onlookers witness to Alou in a terrible state.

Perhaps one of the most gruesome of them all is the injuries suffered by Borje Salming. Salming was the defenseman for the Leafs during the '70s and '80s. After a star run on the ice for years, the Swedish player suffered quite possibly the most gruesome sports injury of them all in 1996. Salming was struck by the ice skate of Gerard Gallant. The blade sliced through Salming's face, cutting the side of his face from his chin to his forehead. The Leafs were up against Detroit and the fans were left horrified by the gruesome sight. Salming required 200 stitches and was left with a noticeable patten left by the skate across his eye.

Another gruesome sports injury to occur on ice took place when the beautiful and talented Jessica Dube was left with horrific facial injuries. The injuries occurred when her skating partner caused her face to scrape the ice during their routine. Dube's skating partner, Byrce Davison, was to blame for the injury, which saw Dube's face sliced open from the impact with the ice. During their ice routine, Davison swung her closer than he should have during the performance. The unfortunate incident left Dube with injuries to her left cheek and her nose, which were sliced open.
