Cuil Not so 'Cool' as They Said

New Search Engine Does Not Come Close to Google, nor is it Accurate

Ryan Kopf
Cuil, a new search engine developed by a husband and wife team claims to be the biggest search engine in the world, archiving more pages than even Google. Wrong already. Their front page touts over 121 billion pages indexed. Google counts over 1 Trillion, but they don't often admit to it. Most of the pages google archives, for example, aren't often found by search users as they simply don't provide any useful content.

First is, of course, a standard test. Searching for something on Cuil will quickly tell you of how useful Cuil actually is is by querying their database for relevant search results. A simple search for "Muscatine News" yielded nothing relevant. I expected to get the Muscatine Journal or perhaps even my own highly keyword-optimized Muscatine News website. Instead nothing useful was returned. Cuil did, however, include several pages from those scavenger sites. You know what I mean. Websites that simply have a whole bunch of junk information. Pages about a city filled with information stolen from other sources, or pages from SEO websites.

Cuil might be the blackhat's dream, though. Cuil claims not to use any link-based techniques, instead only analyzing the content of each individual page. This means that if I stuff a page full of keywords about Cuil, I might actually get to rank #1 in Cuil for itself! After all the first link when looking for Cuil is just this:

But perhaps Cuil might have a use one day. They have several options at this point that could give them a good niche in the search market, and perhaps more.

1. Create a better algorithm - An algorithm that weeds out the pages that have no relevant and useful content. This is where Google is King, considering how hard Google works to fight spam.
2. Search through everything - A useful feature might be if Cuil included every page, except a few of the most obvious spam pages. This could be useful for people searching for obscure, technical, or biological terms that might only exist a couple places on the internet. For example the only page, deeply hidden, about a flucinaciailcrisimanager might help Cuil gain some respect for niche searchers.
3. Stop decieving
- Google has hit nearly a trillion pages. Google, however, doesn't include all of them, especially weeding out spam and beyond, helping keep the web free from uselessness. Tell people you're better and bigger, when you're clearly not, is simply wrong.

They've fixed the searching for "Cuil" thing.... probably after a lot of bad press about it.
