About the Cultural Bazaar

On December 13 and 14, the organization Cultural Survival is putting on its 30th Cultural Bazaar at Harvard University (1730 Cambridge Street, Cambridge). The Cultural Bazaar takes place every winter in a number of locations around Boston and it is the biggest international craft fair in the US. There will be over 20 vendors, mostly indigenous artists from various cultures.

The word bazaar comes from an old Turkish word for marketplace. Accordingly, this fair brings together numerous craftsmen from various cultures and backgrounds to sell their beautiful hand-made art following their old cultural traditions. Visitors will be exposed to indigenous culture through various means: food, music and art. It is Cultural Survival's goal to preserve and share knowledge about indigenous cultures throughout the world to keep them from disappearing.

According to the Cultural Survival website, the Cultural Bazaar has generated over $2.5 million. About 40% of this amount goes to support Cultural Survival and the rest goes directly to the indigenous vendors to support Cultural Survival's goal of promoting and keeping alive indigenous cultures.
