Culture Shock! New World Record Largemouth Bass Caught in Japan
IGFA Certifies All Tackle Recrod Bass
The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) announced in a press release Friday that a 22 pound, 4 ounce largemouth bass caught last July in Japan has been verified as matching the all-tackle largemouth bass world record set by George Perry at Montgomery Lake in Georgia in 1932.
Manabu Kurita, 32, of Aichi, Japan is credited with the record. Kurita was fishing with a live bluegill in Lake Biwa near Kyoto on July 2, 2009 when he fought the fish for three minutes and brought it onto his boat.
The IGFA received Kurita's world-record application which contained video, photographs, and witness affidavits and verified the catch on Friday. Kurita even had to take to take a polygraph test about the catch.
"We decided (the polygraph) was in the best interest...of the IGFA because we've been sued before over largemouth bass records (and) in the best interest of the angler as well because we knew there would be a lot of skeptics,'' IGFA president Rob Kramer said in the press release, saying that Kurita passed the polygraph with "flying colors."
Bass anglers have long expected the new record to come from a place in the USA like California or Texas. To have it broken by an angler in Japan is a huge curveball since bass fishing has become a huge industry in the USA. Unfortunately, Kurtia will likely miss out on the millions of dollars he would have received if he'd caught the bass on a brand-name lure instead of live bait.
Although Kurita's fish weighs more than the old record, the catch is considered a tie by the IGFA because it didn't break the record by more than 2 ounces.
Kurita told the IGFA that he got the bass mounted.

Post a CommentCongratulations to Manabu Kurita. He is a true trophy hunter dedicated to the pursuit of world record bass like no other. I am proud to say that in the past year he has become one of my closest friends, Another person who helps him a great deal but receives no real credit is Reika Ishaguro who designs his website, communicates his thoughts and wishes to me and others, and also is a great angler in her own right. Manabu and Reika are good friends and you can talk with both of them at my website at Northeast Bass Fishing For Trophy Bass. http://delawaretrophybass.com
Tight lines, and best of luck to all trophy hunters the world over on the next world record. Steve Owner
I am suprised it was only a three minute fight.
Holy Cow!
wow now that's huge!very intresting about where it was caught
OMG what a bass! It looks pregnant, I sure hope it wasn't. I wonder if they let it go. They probably didn't, though.
If this one weighs more, then it should hold the record. I think that the 2-ounce rule is silly!!
That was quite a catch.
That's huge! Imagine how many people it would feed!
Hmmm... and this year, a Japanese couple won the world tango competition in Argentina... Be afraid...
Wow! Makes anything I've caught look like a water bug.
