The butter burger is a regional favorite here in the upper Midwest. It originated in Wisconsin because of their love and expertise for all things dairy. The original butter burger is made using a whoppingly gigantic sized dollop of real sweet cream butter creamed on the underside of the top bun of the burger. The buttery bun is then sat atop a hot burger pulled straight off the grille. All of the other fixings and condiments are placed on the bottom bun so that there is nothing between the burger and the top bun except the massive dollop of butter. The secret to eating a good butter burger is to eat it before the butter completely melts.
When I first walked in to Culver's I was immediately thrown off by the higher than average prices. I went with their kids meal, The Scoopie Meal, because it cost less. Culver's butter burger is by no means not the traditional butter burger which utilizes the large amounts of butter. Can you imagine the Supersize Me type of flack the chain would garner if they did serve their burgers in such a fashion? However, the Culver's Butter Burger was surprisingly good. When you first bite into the butter burger it becomes quite clear that there is something different about the way that it tastes. The burger isn't swimming in mounds of butter like the traditional ones but it does have a hint of a buttery flavor and the meat is well seasoned. The next time you're at the BK, MCD, or Wendy's break a piece off of the meat alone and you'll see that it is mainly dull and tasteless and their burgers are heavily reliant upon the condiments and special sauces that are put on them. All in all the Culver's Butter Burger simply tastes better than the usual burger fare. One other thing that deserves mention is the fact that Culver's Scoopie Meal is a far better deal than you'd find at all of the other places. The Scoopie Meal does cost a tiny bit more but it is definitely worth it. I got substantially sized butter burger with cheese, crinkle cut fries, chocolate milk, and a fairly large serving of sweet creamy vanilla custard ( there were two other flavor's of custard to choose from--chocolate and the special of the month). If you're ever in the Midwest and you see the blue and white signs with the friendly invitation to try a butter burger, do yourself a favor and try one. I wouldn't recommend that you eat this way on a regular basis, but it's ok to treat yourself every once in a while.
