On September 14th, when Republican candidate for Governor, Carl Paladino, won the primary, he called Cuomo out to debates. I expected to see Cuomo appear on NY1 television news and other media outlets the very next day to accept Paladino's challenge. I wanted to hear the sentiment, "Yeah, c'mon Carl, put up your dukes. I'll show you and all of New York that I'm the one and only man qualified to be the next Governor of New York."
Now, it's September 24th, nine days since the primary, and I still haven't heard Cuomo accept Paladino's challenge. How dedicated can a man be to doing a job when he's not prepared to stand up and fight for it? If Cuomo can't stand up and fight for the governorship, how would he fight for the people of New York if he became their Governor?
Due to Cuomo's lack to schedule a definite debate, Paladino has made the wisecrack that Cuomo has "no cojones," according to ABC and a world of Internet reports. I wouldn't know about that, but I am disappointed that Cuomo didn't come out swinging after the primary.
On Tuesday, September 22nd, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg endorsed Cuomo. This was a disappointment as well for it makes me question Cuomo's judgment. Many New Yorkers are so fed up with Bloomberg that they want to ship him back to Massachusetts. I watch the show, "The Call," on NY1 every weeknight at 9 pm. The majority of New Yorkers who call in have no use for Bloomberg. Perhaps Cuomo doesn't watch the program? Still, you would think he would have a better sense of his potential voters' feelings.
Another disappointment arose during Bloomberg's endorsement because Cuomo stated, standing right alongside Bloomberg, that he had voted for the Mayor. It turns out it's not true. Cuomo did not vote at all but he endorsed Bloomberg's rival, Bill Thompson, according to the New York Observer. Cuomo's dishonesty is a letdown. We need an honest man up there in Albany to clean up corruption.
I am also disappointed that I have not heard an Andrew Cuomo interview on NY1. I would like to hear what he has to say. However, I may never hear. NY1 has a countdown clock of the number of days Cuomo has repeatedly declined to appear on the show, "Inside City Hall." As of this writing, the clock stands at 1,360 days, 18 hours, 9 minutes, and 15 seconds.
Finally, on September 23rd, former NY Governor Eliot Spitzer made some derogatory comments about Cuomo on CNN, according to the NY Daily News. He said of Cuomo, "Behind the scenes he is the dirtiest, nastiest political player out there, and that is his reputation from years in Washington." Granted, Spitzer's no one to talk because his reputation leaves much to be desired, as well. He's the former Governor due to his sexcapades with prostitutes. Attorney General Andrew Cuomo investigated Spitzer, so Spitzer has motive for revenge. Yet, past history is not a guarantee that his comments about Cuomo are false.
All of this disappointment in Andrew Cuomo is having a negative effect on my potential vote. I do not want to vote for Paladino because I disagree with most of his social stances and his low-ball political tactics. I had intended to vote for Cuomo. But if he's a disappointment before he gets into office, it's a given that he'll be a disappointment after he is in office.
It's not November, yet. In my recent article, "Cuomo Mum on Attorney General Endorsement," I said Cuomo should remain mum. He took my advice. Now, I say, "Olly, olly, oxen free, Mr. Cuomo. Speak to me and all New Yorkers and convince us you're the man for the job."
