Curb Appeal Helps Set Your Home Apart in a Tough Real Estate Market

Jimmy Collins
When you are looking to sell your home in a tough real estate market then you have to pull out all the stops. This means that you will have to roll up your sleeves and get down and dirty with some home improvement. However, a common mistake that is made by many would be sellers is fixing up the inside of the house only and neglecting to pay attention to the curb appeal of the home.

You know when you drive past a house and you say, "Wow, that home is beautiful." Well if you are saying that due to the outside appearance then that is what curb appeal is. Curb appeal is quite simply an appealing look from the street curb. So how do you make your home more appealing?

Start with the yard itself. Look at all your bushes, shrubs, and trees. Make sure that they are all trimmed and that they look uniform, instead of scraggly or uneven. Then be sure that the lawn is mowed and that the grass is filled in properly.

Next you can do some landscaping. Landscaping is an easy way to get creative and to really set your yard apart for the others in the neighborhood. Now this may seem intimidating to you, but it shouldn't be. All you need to do is use your imagination and see what you come up with. If you can't think of anything, go online and see what you find. You can also do what I did and go to your local Home Depot or Lowes. The people in the garden department are full of ideas and should be able to set you on the right path.

Once your yard is ship-shape, turn your attention to the driveway and the outside of your home. If your driveway is stained and dirty then rent a pressure cleaner for the day and get to it. While you have the pressure cleaner, you can use it to clean the exterior of your home as well, just be sure you use a lighter setting. A clean and bright driveway will be an instant invitation to all those who drive by.

Finally, look at the condition of your home's exterior. Does it need paint? If so then you can really add to the curb appeal by giving it a fresh coat. Again, I found Home Depot and Lowes to be a great help in this department. Not only did they have every color combo under the sun, but they were also able to give me ideas as to what base colors and trim colors would go good together.

When it is all said and done, you should be able to step back and see a bright, clean, and inviting house that anyone would love to own. Increasing the curb appeal on your home is a sure way to sell your home faster. Remember, if you want to be picked first, you have to stand out from the rest of the crowd.

Curb appeal is so important unless someone is looking to buy a tear-me-down. ;-)

You are absolutely correct here. when I had my house appraised a few years ago, the guy said it went up in value moreso than some of the other homes because of its curb appeal. I jus tlove greenery and lot a lot of stuff. So, i have a well maintained yard with a few exceptional shrubs and plants and tht's it. Simple, but he said it was very classy. Great info!
