I went back to the doctor who promptly told me that it was all in my head and that we don't have enough nerve endings on our insides which feel itching sensations. He also told me to get more exercise and stop eating junk food. Just lose weight he said, and I would feel better. He didn't seem to get that I was eating a gluten free vegan diet and that I didn't have the energy to be upright for more than a few minutes.
When it all Began
After several months, the end of July 2006 rolled around and my friend left on a trip we were suppose to take together, but I was just too tired and my cough had worsened. I told her the morning we were suppose to leave for the weekend, that I didn't feel well enough to go. A small fight ensued as she rushed to pack and leave and I refused to help because I was just too tired. That was Friday morning. By Saturday night I was burning up with a fever, having heart palpitations, unable to keep any liquid in, and felt like an anvil was in my chest.
I grew scared and called an ambulance around midnight. I had to crawl up the stairs to open the door and could barely stand there, waiting for them. As the EMT's aided me in walking to the ambulance I began to pass out. As they strapped me to the gurney I began to fade. I felt like I was being sucked into blackness. I found out later that they not only gave me air and saline solution, but that my heart had stopped and they gave me an injection of something to get it started again.
While at emergency they performed an x-ray and told me that they would have to do some scans because the x-rays of my chest appeared completely blocked. They injected me with a dye which felt like battery acid flowing though my veins and I tried to scream out, but couldn't. I began convulsing. They had to stop the process, but got good enough pictures to tell that my lungs were filled with bacteria and I had about 15% lung function left.
The Treatments
I was immediately put on antibiotics and steroids in hopes of fighting the infection, a war raged on in my chest. I was too weak to even cough up phlegm, and could barley walk. They said I took 5 bags of saline solution in those first few hours. I had been so dehydrated that my immune system was shutting down.
I requested to go home. They refused my requests, stating that I was too sick and needed constant care. After much begging, they said I had to get someone else to sign the release papers and they had to verify that I did not live alone and then that person had to call them and guarantee constant supervision of my condition. After which I got to go home.
The first round of antibiotics was promising. I don't remember what it was, but I began to feel much better. Though, after the first round was over, my x-rays still showed only 50% or less lung function and tests revealed I had a staph infection in my lungs, blood, and bladder. To get rid of this infection I had to take a second, stronger antibiotic. This one would cause ulcers and bleeding. After that antibiotic had finished, I had secondary infections in my stomach and severe ulcers. And the staph infection in my lungs and blood was still present.
Six months later and on my third round of antibiotics, I was still sick. I mostly ate vegetable soups and stayed wrapped up in blankets. I was so tired and felt so sick. I could barely keep food in or down. Even water gave me heartburn.
Eight Months Later
Follow up appointments revealed I still had the staph infection in my lungs and blood, but it was being managed. The heartburn was caused by an H. Pylori infection in my stomach. Another round of antibiotics was given, this one came with an antispasmodic and anti-hallucinogen. It was that drug which changed me. My personality changed. This, the doctors said, was the strongest antibiotic they could give me. They informed me that the likely problem was not the infection, but that my tests revealed I had no T-cells. I had no antigens for anything, not even chicken pox, the flu, or a cold. My blood work was devoid of any. But they could clearly see a high amount of white blood cells.
That doctor was kind enough to review blood work from previous checkups and discovered doctor's notes from those previous years that they could find no T-cells, or that an abnormally small amount of damaged and immature T-cells were found. Now normally this is caused by a serious infection such as AIDs or Hepatitis, but I had requested an AID, HIV, and other communicable disease check with each checkup every year since I started college and they had always turned up negative.
The doctor informed me that this was likely a genetic condition and that I might have been suffering from this all my life. He also said that, had I not been rushed to emergency, I would have died, my body could not form a resistance to this infection. He asked for a more compete write up of my medical history from when I was a child. I didn't have one, but I gave him a timeline of illnesses I had had, including repeated chickenpox infections and respiratory infections all through childhood.
That doctor informed me that there was likely nothing that could be done. This lung infection would have to be managed since the strongest antibiotics they had couldn't get rid of it. He gave me no hope, just standard steroidal and antibiotic care for the rest of my life. I remained on different antibiotics for the next 6 or 7 months. In total, I was on antibiotics, steroidal inhalers, and asthma inhalers for a total of 18 to 20 months, and was still battling the lung infection and had the possibility of the blood staph infection returning. I had a bladder infection nearly every month.
A Budding Hope of Health
In March of 2008 my roommate decided to join Gold's gym and begged me to join her. I was beginning my search for work and looking for ways to earn an income from home. I was still sick, still fighting the lung infection with a good diet. One of her trips to the gym without me introduced her to a maximized living center. This is a whole health chiropractic center with not just spinal adjustments, but classes on healthier living and curing ourselves with proper eating and exercise.
After much begging on her part, I agreed to sign a joint contract. After all, I was having trouble walking and often could not feel my hands, arms, legs, or feet. Sometimes they would just quit responding and dangle there like an atrophied body part. I decided that chiropractic care could possible help this.
X-rays of our spines revealed startling news. While most of her spine was fine, the vertebra in her neck were begining to deform, while the spine in my lower back was twisted around backwards. That's right, backwards. It's no wonder I was so sick, he said. Nerve impulses from my brain were pinched off and my body was literally dying, he said.
Our contract included that we must attend two classes per year plus come to treatments three times per week, which included exercises to help the spine be stronger. The classes and videos we watched included methods of healthy eating that, even a vegetarian who had studied eastern medicine like myself, had not known.
He recommended that I take vitamin-C 5,000 mg per day and take NAC N-Acetyl-Cysteine, an amino acid primarily used in the body to build healthy respiratory tissue. I can happily say that 6-months later, I was completely free of the asthma and lung infection. I no longer suffer from the bladder infections. In addition to these supplements, I was advised to drink a greens drink, which I had already begun doing, but now would do so daily. I now take Greens 8000 and Kids 8000 beverages.
That fall we took another class called the Maximized Living Makeover. I still have the book and I refer to it often. Another book we got was Fat Sally, it was a cook book for eating to be healthy and élan. Most recipes were gluten free and it explained how white products, corn products, and meat from animals raised on grains and steroids was making us fat. I followed the cook book's eating plan and lost 30 pounds in a single month. I was feeling so good and healthy. Part of the new eating plan included a protein shake designed by Maximized Living. They have two formulas, a dairy-free vegan and a regular one made from milk taken from dairy cows raised on a strict grass fed and organic diet in Australia.
The shakes were delicious, we would put a banana, cup of blueberries, a scoop of shake mix, and some flavored omega-fish oil into them. For fiber we would add fresh ground flaxseed. The shakes were a godsend, providing energy and vitality I hadn't felt since I was a little kid. The diet part of the plan included eating mostly fresh and freshly cooked vegetables, raw and lightly toasted nuts, organic meats, and cutting out all other forms of sugar and carbohydrates. That's right, nothing which was processed or contained any added sugars or sweeteners. And no chemical sweeteners either. This part of the plan was to be undertaken for at least 4 to 6 weeks, but was recommend for diabetics, those who are over weight, or who, after trying it, would still get sick if they ate grains, sugars, or flours.
If the person could handle eating starchy foods, ten part two of the diet included whole grain foods such as organic brown rice, Ezekial-9:14 products, and other whole grain and unprocessed foods such as steel cut oats, wheat barriers, and barley. This plan could be consumed indefinitely, but still for another 3-months the person could not eat any added sugars but sweeteners stevia and xylitol could be used in moderation.
After that point in moderation, the person could eat one "bad food" meal per week, such as a rich dessert, fast food, or dining out, but were to limit their exposure to processed foods to just that one meal per week. They did note that many would find, at that point, they did not like the junk food or would feel nauseated after eating the foods they once loved. Which is probably a good thing.
Current Care
After a year and half of care, I am almost pain free. I still battle my weight, but am slowly losing pounds and gaining muscle strength. I did have to discontinue treatments because my current income doesn't barely cover food, much less treatments. I do know that I will return as soon as I can because constant weekly spinal adjustments are what helped my spine return to a normal position, have helped me become healthier than ever. I still continue to eat better than I used to, and take supplements. I now can work out daily and even can take long walks to the store over a mile a way and bring home groceries.
Alternative health care has changed my life. I may forever be plagued with this immune disorder, but now at least I know how to eat to overcome getting sick. I no longer rely on inhalers, doctors, or antibiotics and steroids to keep my lungs functioning. I no longer battle H. Pylori infections, ulcers, bladder infections, nor toss up every meal I eat.
I do have to take vitamin-E oil and vitamin-B supplements or else I break out in horrible blisters and boils. And I do have to drink my greens, take my vitamins, get my omega fatty acids, and eat lots of fruits and vegetables. I can say, the extra expense is worth it. I have energy, I can write articles and books like a maniac, and I no longer wake up, unable to get out of bed due to pain and lack of motion and use of my arms or legs, most importantly, I can take a deep, both lungs full, breath of air. I can breath deeply and it's so pleasurable. I don't know how long it has been since my lungs have felt this wonderful.
I do recommend to anyone who is suffering from immune system problems, illnesses, lung problems, diabetes, heart problems, or any other health problem, to get into contact with a Maximized Living Center right away and at least, try out their ideas on health care. For if we put into our bodies the food and nutrients as God designed them, and not the industrialized garbage being sold as a food product, our health improves 100%. Their motto is, they move the spine and the body/god does the healing.
Truly, with proper and fully functioning nerve impulses going from the body through the spine to the brain, they can induce the brain to know what's wrong and begin to fix the body. If those nerve impulses are cut off due to a misaligned spine, then the brain and the body cannot communicate and the body begins to vacillate and dies. Not only does proper nerve function need to be restored so that the brain and body can properly communicate, dangerous chemicals found in our foods can impede this process. Why put garbage into our bodies?
