Curiousity Abounds in Benjamin Button

Patrick G. Whalen
Before sitting down to take in the Curious Case of Benjamin Button, make sure you have a kettle of coffee brewing in the kitchen. While the settings and supporting cast of Benjamin Button make for an interesting backdrop, Benjamin (Brad Pitt) is just plain and well, not too curious.

The opening scene of Benjamin Button attempts to set the pace, but it falters shortly thereafter. The story grinds away slowly for the next hour (which seems almost like an eternity) until the momentum finally finds a footing.

If the viewer can muddle through to this point, there are moments of reward in the form of an interesting romantic interlude. The twists and turns that follow bring the viewer back from the precipice of a pending coma. In the end, the credits roll just as eyes in the audience sockets.

It is a shame that a movie with such potential and attention to detail falls short on delivery. This reviewer is simply left wondering just what was so curious that drove movie-goers to the theaters when this was first released.
