Curly Hairstyles for Short, Medium and Long Fine Hair

Chances are, if you've got a thick mane of wild "untameable" hair, then you long for tresses that are more conservatively shaped. And if you happen to have tight natural curls, then you are prone to frequent salon straightening. Fine, curly hair happens to be one those styling phenomena that requires a studied hand. You may think that your natural curls are the bane of your fabulous existence. But lurking beneath the surface is a to-die-for hairstyle. Fine, curly hair tends to do different things at various lengths. Chopping off some of the length provides you with more options than having longer tresses. Short, fine hair certainly isn't out of the question. This tricky hair texture may not seem to provide many options. But guess what? You can transform your finicky hair and still keep your curls.

The "Blowout"

Blowing out curly, fine hair isn't always the best styling option. Doing so sometimes results in a hairstyle that looks sickly as opposed to spectacular. Nonetheless, blowing out fine, curly hair is merely one step in the process to achieving more voluminous waves. After shampooing and conditioning, blow the hair out until it is semi-straight. Pull the hair into a few large sections. Then use large curling rods to create loose waves. Use a hood dryer on a cooler setting to "set" the waves. Finger-comb to provide volume. While you might think that this method is a bit tedious, it is actually quite popular in Dominican hair salons, where the hair is both blown and set to achieve bounce and body. (Note: this styling method works best on medium lengths.)

The Short "Natural"

Many black women with fine, kinky hair have difficulties finding styles to suit both their hair texture and facial shape. African American hair textures can be particularly tricky to figure out. Nonetheless, attempting to compensate for a lack of volume with length is one mistake made with curly, fine hair. This is why women with this particular type of hair texture sometimes opt for closely cropped styles. The good news is that these cropped 'dos are very becoming on black women and typically are easy to maintain and style. Cutting hair into a "fade" (or similar short cut) can be exceptionally stunning, as the natural texture can be better appreciated.

Layers Are Your Friend

Women with exceptionally fine hair may discover that layering is another great way to create shape where there otherwise is none. Better yet, layering fine hair that is naturally curly can have some profound effects. For instance, long fine hair that has a natural curl pattern sometimes appears limp when it is all one length. Adding a few well-placed layers not only provides movement, but also provides the illusion of fullness. Spritz with a volumizing spray for a Bohemian look; slightly relax the curl for natural looking waves.
