Current Coqui Eradication Techniques

Boricua
The coqui is a tiny tree frog loved by Puerto Ricans. The tiny creature is native to Puerto Rico and is like a mascot to the locals. Many Puerto Rican souvenirs are adorned with the likeness of the tiny frogs. The coquis are very very small. In fact, they can be about the size of your thumb nail. What is amazing about the coquis is how such a tiny animal can make such a powerful and beautiful sound. This is what has made the coquis so loved. Evenings in Puerto Rico are filled with the beautiful serenades of the coquis, who are found all over the island. The locals love their little mascot and many visitors love them as well once they hear their beautiful melody. It is a sound you will never forget, and it is a sound missed by Puerto Ricans when they leave the island.

Unfortunately, not all people feel the way Puerto Ricans do about the coquis. For example, in Hawaii many people speak about their hatred of the coqui. The coqui keeps them up at night, so they claim. What is so bad about being serenaded by little frogs? They're too loud. It's annoying. There are too many of them. That's what a lot of Hawaiians say. Many Hawaiians have grown to hate the coquis so much that they want to kill them, much to the dismay of the Puerto Ricans.
The Hawaiians are so determined to get rid of the coquis that they have "Coqui Tree Frog Control Classes". These classes teach the residents of Hawaii how to successfully kill coquis in an easy and fast manner. What's even worse is that these classes are free, like it's some type of community service. It is hard to see how killing these frogs can be a service to the community. Unfortunately for the coquis, these classes teach how to successfully eradicate the tiny creatures.

There are several methods currently being used to eradicate the coquis. One is with the use of citric acid. The acid is sprayed directly on the frogs or their eggs and they die shortly after. This corrosive chemical has been approved by the EPA for coqui eradication, although users should be warned that citric acid can be damaging to plants. Another technique used to get rid of the coquis is hydrated lime. Again, this is sprayed directly on the plants where the coquis live with the same results.

Another incredibly cruel fashion of killing coquis is with a hot water shower. People shower plants with water around 113 degrees Fahrenheit. Obviously this has the desired effect. A final tool used in the eradication of coquis is a trap. People set traps using PVC pipe or bamboo. Once the coquis are in the traps they are killed either with citric acid, hydrated lime, or hot water. Either way, the poor coquis undoubtedly suffer in their last moments. And what for? Because people don't want to be burdened?

It is amazing how the Puerto Ricans love the coqui, yet Hawaiians hate them so much they want them dead. It is a shame that everyone cannot enjoy the beauty that the coquis bring to the evenings. Do these little creatures really deserve to die?

How is it hard to see how killing these frogs can be a service to the community?Come to Hawaii and try to sleep through tens of thousands of frogs making those noises all night long, all year long. It's not just "annoying", for some people it's not even possible for them to sleep without sleeping medication and pills. Not to mention, they prey on the same food that the birds native to Hawaii do, only making the already endangered species more stressed.

yes they deserve to die. they are affecting not only the personal lives of people living in hawaii but they are affecting our real estate and tourism industry. We are irritated by the noise and to double it up we are losing money that could be made from potential tourists. They have no positive effect in hawaii.

People from the mainland are so uneducated about a lot of things. Not all, most. I agree with what some mainland people are saying about protecting them and helping them. But you guys don't understand. Having these coqui frogs here hurt the environment and everything that is here. It's like if one of our species that is native, goes to the mainland and disrupts your natural environment and over populates where you guys in the mainland are having to find a solution for that problem now which didn't start out to be your problem. The coqui frogs have a nice sound, but there's a lot of other problems then just that.

Where are the animal activists to stand up for the coqui?? it seems animal activists are always trying to save animals somewhere. So who is speaking up for the cute little sing frogs who are being killed. Would you shoot or poison a bird who is singing in your back yard?

Coqui frogs are not native to Hawaii and there are no predators to keep their numbers in check. Hawaii has a huge problem with invasive species, and the coqui is one more that happens to also keep people awake at night. We are all for preserving the coqui in Puerto Rico, but please understand that the coqui in Hawaii is out of place and an invasive pest. Learn more about the problems of invasive species in Hawaii before you call Hawaiians heartless. Here's a website that will keep you informed: http://hawaiiinvasivespecies.org/

One Man's pleasure is another man's pain. The coqui is an invasive species and threatens endemic organisms in Hawai`i's fragile ecosystems. In short, the coqui is fine in PR, but in Hawai`i is a pest.

What is wrong with Hawaiians. Coquis sing the most lovely songs and help keep mosquito populations down. They are the cutest little frogs. I can't believe those Hawaiians are torturing and murdering our beloved frogs.

Actually, I think that a lot of times when people who are not from Hawaii say "Hawaiian" they mean it in the same way that they would say "Californian" or "Texan". I've met some mainlanders who didn't even know there was a race of native people called the Hawaiians...they think it just means you live in the state of Hawaii. So don't be too offended next time. Oh, and I'm one of those people that actually enjoy the coqui sounds....
