spied this "deadly weapon".The girl had helped her family move and forgot some kitchen utensils. One being a Turkey knife. The female Honor student was expelled and brought up on a charge of bringing weapons to school. While the reality of this is, She is Guilty. Period. Given probation , DNA taken, for storage in the Homeland Security data base, she is now a recorded offender.
Incidents like this and others occur every day across America. Some justified, others not. There is something really wrong with the Justice system.
Perhaps it starts at the top. When you have the chief law enforcement officer of the land, (Alberto Gonzales), stand before our duly elected Congress,
and say that, "no where in the Constitution does it say, American citizens have a right to "Writ of Habeas Corpus. It only says (in the Constitution),
that it can't be taken away".This is a kind of double speak that Hitler would be proud to hear Goebels say. Getting back to Juvenile Justice. What happened to the neighborhood cop, who knew the kids by name, even watched them grow up.The cop who understood kids, and in many cases simply brought them home when they did wrong. In most cases, 'Dad' would mete out a more tailored punishment, than the police. The kids could grow up unhindered by criminal charges.
Most are today's professionals. Doctors, lawyers, nurses even senators and presidents. Anyone who says they didn't do anything stupid growing up, is Lying.
Where did America go wrong? Why the sudden rush to judgment on our children. I understand that the days of Norman Rockwells' America,
are sadly over.
The criminal justice field is booming. America incarcerates and executes more people than any other civilized nation in the world. In Florida,
the Department of Juvenile Justice requirements for "Juvenile Corrections officers",is unbelievably simple."You must be able to add and subtract".This has to be a fantastic opportunity for people looking for work. I can't help but wonder, as to the psychological profile of the individuals hired. DJJ, would have you believe that abuse is an anomaly. I suspect it is not. The juvenile system should be geared to help the floundering youth, not criminalize them. What they are doing is simply perpetuating the revolving door. Granted some kids are just so bad they have to be put away. For the most part, the good kids, with a minimum of help would do just fine. As teenagers growing up, I'm sure we all cut a class or two. Probation officers make this a jailable offence. Kids sometimes have hard time reconciling the fact, that since they got caught shoplifting, they can no longer be forgiven for even minor transgressions. They now, must be institutionalized.
We have appointed judges, who care less what the boy's high school feels or even what the states own PHD or psychiatrist's recommend. The state atty ,public defender and state appointed judges, have it all worked out, inside the "Star Chamber".
