The Importance of Keeping Track of Trends

Innovation and change is crucial for a nation to grow and prosper. Knowing the current popular trends can give great insight to the direction into which technology is changing as well as the general shift in the paradigm of a society. Things are rapidly changing and if you are not aware of what is happening you might be at a competitive disadvantage. Keeping up on trends can lead to a success business or personal life.

What are some Big Trends?

Ecologically-friendly products, services, and practices: This paradigm was brought to the general public in the early 1980's with recycling. We are seeing a large movement towards creating products that do not cause waste and do not pollute the environment. This mission is not only used in the process of creating the products but disposing of them as well. Where as before this time there was a general lack of public concern for the environment, people are finally coming to the realization that the fate of humans beings and the environment in which we occupy are intertwined. It has become the status quo to the point where companies are looked down upon if they do not seek a "green" means with their products and services. There is great demand for companies to be eco-friendly. If they do not adapt and adjust their business, there competitors will and they will be at a disadvantage.

Energy Efficiency and Low Power Consumption: With rising fuel prices and higher utility bills, many consumers have tried to cut costs by making wiser purchasing decisions based on reducing energy and simple home improvements to cut down on costs. Furthermore, the "green" movement has gained strength since the tragic awareness of global warming has become apparent. People want to preserve the earth for future generations through eco-friendly responsibility. Low power consumption extends from households to manufacturers. Companies that manufacture products are also looking ways to simplify their processes and ultimately produce less energy. Furthermore, in the consumer sector, consumer electronics and other electric-powered goodies are being developed on the principle of low power consumption. Computer technology from both the standpoint of batteries and operating systems are designed to reduce power and extend battery life for the consumer. This trend is likely to continue to a point where the cost of using the products will become so insignificant and immaterial that people can use these devices freely without having to worry about battery life at all.

Functionality first, aesthetics later: Society has to for far too long been focused on looks rather than the integrity of design. A paradigm shift is occurring where customers now are demanding companies to fix their products and tailor them to the end users specifications. Before this innovation and change was determined by a company's competition and using the end user as a secondary factor in determining why to innovate instead of how and when to innovate. After the products have been designed to the users' specs then the psychological tendencies of physical perception to buy the product can be factored in.

Integration and Universality: This is the most impactful trend and one of the easiest to witness. For the next twenty or so we are going to see the integration of both existing and new technologies. Take for example the cell phone. A cell phone used to be used simply as a mobile phone to call people. Now it is a personal device manager, a medium of getting updated with news, and multitude of different communication forms including text-messaging, email, and Bluetooth. The natural evolution of things is to create an all-in-one device that will be able to do everything you possibly want. Even once the integration of all existing technologies is complete this paradigm will still persist as there are always new technological developments. As a part of integration is universality. People want to be able to grab any device and have it be able to access content without any extra work. People also want all devices to be used in a similar manner. Much in the same way, they want all devices to be compatible with all file types without the hassle of converting or wasting time getting software or, for physical products, creating or adjusting the product to fit the person's needs. We will likely see a number of standards converge into a single set that cannot be misinterpreted or misconstrued. This type of universality is not limited to products and services but policies and practices as well. The constant need to integrate and unify for convenience and efficiency will be a major trend throughout our lifetimes.
