Curriculum Vitae Versus Resume

Is a Curriculum Vitae or a Resume Better?

Marcia Robinson
A curriculum vitae, also called a "Vita" or "CV", is a detailed summary of education, work experience and professional activities. The curriculum vitae is usually accompanied by a detailed cover letter connecting a job applicant's background to the position for which the applicant is applying.

Curriculum Vitae verses Resume?

1. The curriculum vitae is used primarily by job seekers applying for jobs in the academic, education and scientific research fields.
2. Many applications for grants, fellowships and scholarship also specifically ask for curriculum vitae.
3. If applying for jobs overseas, applicants may be asked for a curriculum vitae since employers in other countries prefer more details from a job seeker.
4. The typical curriculum vitae is much longer than a typical resume. An application packet with a curriculum vitae, letter of interest and letters of recommendation could be several pages.

What to include when writing a Curriculum Vitae:

1. Heading of a curriculum vitae is identical to the heading on a resume. It includes basic demographic details like name with educational credentials such as Phd, MSW, MD etc.; address (temporary and permanent), email and telephone number.

2. An objective statement is used to establish the focus of the curriculum vitae. The objective statement will address academic or research interest and connect with the program or job in which the job seeker is interested.

3. List all education and training including undergraduate, graduate, post graduate, certification, and continuing education coursework in the curriculum vitae. Include names of college or university and city located. List any outcomes from degree name, minors, completion dates and areas of concentration. Include GPA if 3.0 or higher.

4. Include professional licenses and relevant certifications in the curriculum vitae.

5. Educational and professional honors and awards should also be included in the curriculum vitae. All scholarships, fellowships and special academic awards, including Dean's List, should be added. Include a description of the award, any dollars associated and dates of award.

6. Grant funds secured should be included in the curriculum vitae as well.

7. Details of academic research and laboratory experience including institution, project and professors. Name research papers and any special techniques used. Include details of thesis or dissertations.

8. Include clubs, memberships, professional associations or societies.

9. Work experience is listed in reverse chronological order on a curriculum vitae. Include dates of employment, cities and duties or responsibilities. Pay attention to accomplishments.

10. Any strong technical and language skills should also be listed in the curriculum vitae.

Making the decision to use a curriculum vitae or a resume really depends on the purpose of the document. Regardless of the final decision, the curriculum vitae and the resume should be written to show the job seeker's skills and experience in the best way possible.
