Cursing and Pain

Can Cursing Helop with Your Pain?

Mandy Albermarle
I recently read that cursing can alleviate pain. Technically, though, the study compared obscenities to their neutral euphemisms, and found that the people who cursed were able to withstand pain longer than the people who just said "darn". Where did this physical manifestation come from? Is it possible that just powerful cultural implications give the shouter the ability to better withstand pain. It's like magic. The fact that language has the ability to change a person's physical well being because it is such a mentally strong component to human life is amazing.
