Curves in Weight Loss Programs

Stephen Schultz
In a recent IHRSA conference, Curves founder Gary Heavin explained how he started the program. Curves is a recent weight loss program that popped up overnight. Curves is an actual fitness facility that has locations nationwide. Gary Heavin explained to the IHRSA crowd that his program didn't take away from any of the other workout facilities out there. In fact, it was a way that new fitness enthusiasts could get started and then seek other ways to continue their fitness routines.

Curves program is pretty simple, deliberately. The Curves format consists of a variety of equipment laid out in a circuit training format, one exercise done at a time in stations. After a few minutes, each person moves to a new machine. The machine are designed for this format, as are the trainers in the gym. At Curves it isn't just about working out, it about comradery in weight loss, a big benefit to the Curves program. Workouts are conducted in classes and take place throughout the day.

But what do Curves members do after they have exhausted the limits of the fitness routine laid out before them? This is what Gary Heavin was explaining. At this point, someone that has gone through the Curves program, is usually looking for more. While Curves may be be great for initial weight loss, it may not be as inclusive as other programs regarding continued weight loss. So, Mr. Heavin's argument was that these continued gym users would now be able to venture out into the expanded fitness world and find new way to continue to stay in shape.

So, how would these people continue to lose weight and get in shape? As long as they continue to focus on the three big items for weight loss: diet, cardio and weight training, they can workout in virtually any gym in America. If they are looking for good guidance, seek a fitness facility that has an extensive, highly qualified training staff. If they want to do it more on their own, they should focus on the three items mentioned above then find a gym or fitness facility gives them the specific workout equipment that they want.

Here is further explanation of diet, cardio and weight training. Basic guidelines/generalities are as follows: diet: do not allow your food intake to increase with greater amounts of exercise. Try to decrease overall calories by 10%. Cardio: consists of doing any activity that causes a participant to have slightly labored breathing and to repeat/continue this activity 20-30 minutes a shot, 4-6 times a week. Weight training: consists of doing 1-3 sets of 12-15 reps of a multi-joint activities, covering the whole body 2-3 times a week, never back to back days. Further explanation can be found at my blog site and links from there. Other weight loss ideas can be found here.

Now that Curves has shown the way it gives many other initiation type weight loss facilities the chance to participate in this new genre. And other long term fitness facilities are always glad to get the continued workout enthusiasts spilling out of Curves looking for ways to continue their workout routines. For those in the fitness field that love to see people working out any way possible, let me just say I hope the trend continues.
