Customer Service Review: Best Buy in Lynchburg, VA

Angelie MacKenzie
The majority of my experiences at Best Buy have been bad. Clearly, Best Buy needs to work on their customer service issues. Not to mention they also need to hire some knowledgeable employees.

Experience #1 - Transferring data between computers

I called Best Buy about buying a cable to transfer data between computers. The man who answered told me that they only sold a cable along with the software for approximately $50. However, there was no one working who could locate this product when my mom went there to buy it. After a lot of looking around the store, she finally found it. But the sales associates were of no help.

Experience #2 - Buying a dvd recorder/VCR combo player

When I bought a dvd recorder/VCR combo player a few years ago, I called Best Buy to ask them what they recommended. Like most sales associates who don't have an answer, his response was it depended on whatever I wanted. That wasn't helpful at all. If you don't know what progressive scan is (or other things pertaining to the product), it can be impossible to know what you want.

Experience #3 - Buying an MP3 player

After a lot of searching online, I figured out what MP3 player that I wanted. But I wanted to buy it in a local store in case it turned out that I didn't like it. When I found out that Best Buy was the only store that had the MP3 player that I wanted, I called them to find out the colors that they had.

I called several times, but that department wouldn't answer the phone. After I got a manager on the phone, she checked and it turned out that they only had one color available. I wasn't too crazy about the black/green design, but it wasn't that bad since the green was only used for trim.

I went to the store a couple days later to buy the MP3 player. Not only was I unable to find the MP3 player I wanted (I did see another brand), but I also couldn't find an employee to help me. On the other side of the store from the MP3 player that I did find, I spotted a Best Buy employee. He only said that they were over there were the other one was. He seemed rather disinterested and I ended up just leaving the store. And then I bought my MP3 player online from another store.

Experience #4 - Hooking up the MP3 player to play in the car

Since Best Buy was the only local store that carried the MP3 player I wanted, I called them to see how to hook it up in my car. I suspected that one of those tape adapters that goes in the car's cassette player and hooks up to a portable cd player would work with an MP3 player. I was right, one of those would work. However, the Best Buy sales associate suggested a higher price item, an FM transmitter. I read about those online and discovered that they weren't necessarily the best. So I bought the tape adapter.

When I arrived home with the tape adapter, it was wet. Looking down in the bag, I discovered that there was a liquid in the bag that appeared to be a soft drink. However, I'd had nothing to drink (I rarely ever have soft drinks anyway). Apparently, it was already down in the plastic bag when the girl at the checkout placed the item in there. But I didn't know this until I got all the way home. Another day, I returned it and bought the tape adapter somewhere else for half the price.

Experience #5 - Hooking up the MP3 player to play on my stereo

Wanting to hook up my MP3 player to the MP3 jack on my stereo, I called Best Buy to see what cable I needed. The man I spoke with was convinced what cable I needed. So, I believed him, but I had my mom buy the cable at Wal-Mart since she was already there. Turned out to be the wrong cable and I had to later return it. I tried asking the place where the stereo came from, but they didn't know what cable to use either. Radio Shack was the only place that knew what cable I needed.

Experience #6 - Buying a mini fridge. They assured me that they had it in stock, but when I arrived at the store, they didn't. I'm not convinced that they ever had it in stock to begin with.

For the first three examples, they were the only place that had what I wanted.

Why do you keep going back to Best Buy?
