Cut Your Heating Bills

As we all know the cost to heat our homes has almost doubled in one year. It is getting harder and harder to make ends meet. I have tried a few easy steps to try to cut down our heating cost. Why not give it a try and see if it helps you for the up coming heating season.

First use something like a fleece blanket to cut down on the drafts. Roll them up and place them in areas like door ways and windows that leak air. Any type of blanket will work but I used fleece since I had a few extra around the house.

Cold air in an attic can really hike up the heating bill. It is a very good idea to insulate the attic. To prevent the warm air from rising through the ceiling and out the attic, try insulating the attic. Rigid insulation is easy to work with. You will notice a big difference when you place insulation in your attic. I know it is not easy to insulate with your money going in different directions. Try at least placing some type of coverage on the attic follow. My niece just redid an old house and she grabbed carpet ruminants that she found for free at a yard sale. She placed the carpet on the floor in the attic. For free she cut down the expense of heating her house.

Just as our bodies need regular yearly check ups so should our furnaces? Have your furnaces checked once a year. Regular cleaning and changing filters in your furnace will cut back on how hard your furnace is working to heat your home. Change your thermostat every 5 to 10 years at least. If a thermostat is off it can cause your furnace to run more often than needed.

Place your thermostat in the room where spend the most time. Do not place it in areas where you are just passing through such as hallways. A basement could have a lot of drafts so this is not a great place to put one. The best place to put a thermostat is on an inner wall in the living room. This is the area of your house in which you spend more time and it is in the center of your house so you get a real reading on the temperature of your home. An outer wall will feel cooler so the thermostat will not really be giving you the reading of your house.

These steps are easy and very inexpensive so try them out and see how much you save this heating season.
