Cutting Down the Cost of Heating Your Home During the Winter

Lance Esondi
When it's cold outside, you want to have plenty of heat inside to help you stay warm during the winter. While this is a comfort and in some places an absolute necessity, it can cost quite a bit and sometimes break your budget. There are things that you can be doing that will help you save on your heating costs to have the heat without wasting money.

If you can, do what you can to insulate your home again. Older homes don't have as good of insulation as newer ones. You might be losing heat from improper insulation. While it will be an initial investment, in the long run proper insulation will help cut your heating bills quite a bit.

Windows are another problem as they are a common source of heat loss. If you have the funds, get new windows that are sealed properly. If you are poor, get heavy blankets that you can place over the windows blocking them. This prevents the cold air from coming in or the heat from going out. The thicker the barrier, the more heat you will keep inside. Either of these options can help save you some money.

You could turn off your central heat and go with portable heaters as well. You might not need every room to be heated at all hours of the day. Go purchase new portable heaters as these are much safer than the older models that have more of a chance of causing a fire. Put these heaters in the rooms that you spend the most time in during the day. Heat what you need and not what you aren't using.

When the sun is shining down on your home, take advantage of this heat. Make sure your windows are not blocked so your home will get warmer as the sun light shines through. In most places the south facing windows get the most sun in the winter months. Stay in those rooms of the house as they will be warmer during the day.
