Cutting Edge Treatment for Ulcerative Colitis

Gary Davis
I have been waiting to write this article as you will see shortly. As an ulcerative colitis sufferer I am interested in the fact there are new treatments or "cutting edge treatments", and I'm sure there will be more in the future. But to me the exciting part isn't necessarily the medication or actual treatment as the comprehensive and unique improvements to the approach with respect to existing "treatment".

Certainly one proven medication is Remicade. This medication works from the standpoint of the ulceration of the ulcerative colitis and actually allows a patient to go into a state beyond remission. This treatment was pioneered by the University of Kentucky.

For years the issue of what to eat has been a bane for the ulcerative colitis sufferer. Finally someone did comprehensive research in that area so that you have a ready and complete reference to know what will work for your particular version of inflammatory bowel disease.

"What to Eat With IBD" is Tracie Dalessandro's (MS RD CDN) monumental work that gives every ulcerative colitis sufferer a roadmap as to what they can and can't put in their mouth. I have mentioned her book in another article and I feel that it belongs here as well. She has suffered right along with the rest of us and she had a mission when she researched this book; it is nothing short of "cutting edge treatment" information.

Today we have an opportunity to see an example of what I hope will be the future. That is for a company to live up to their responsibility to society that you are taught companies are supposed to do so in Business 101.

Shire Pharmaceutical has created a medication named Lialda that simply requires a one-time daily dose if you have ulcerative colitis. That's great, but Shire has taken additional steps to battle this illness. First, they go to the public and educate. They have provided a couple of national seminars, the latest being "On the Road Again" which I had the good luck to attend. This is amazing! They are not out there selling drugs, they are taking an active interest in ulcerative colitis; this is groundbreaking!

As an adjunct to Shire's informative program, they garner information to assess. They also try to battle ignorance of an illness that attacks an inordinate number of people.

Remicade is a great new drug. However, most exciting cutting edge therapies in my view are the comprehensive diets that we now know about and the fact that a major company is working on our behalf.
