CWFI Devotional Bible Guide: Aaron Lesson Five

The Adventures: Before the King

Dr. Phillip Clark
Exodus 5:1-5 "Before the King

A. Moses and Aaron talked to the people, then they went to visit the king of Egypt. They said to him, "The LORD God of Israel, says: 'Let my people go so they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.'"

B. But Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD that I should listen to him and let Israel go? I know not the LORD, and I will not let Israel go." (Note: The leaders of Egypt worshiped many gods and now needed an introduction to God of Israel.) (Note: His former predecessor knew the God of Israel, but this Pharaoh rather hold people who happen to love and serve a powerful God. These people of God happens to occupy land within Egypt boundaries. It would behoove the king of Egypt to let Israel serve their own God. For it is abominable to allow Israelites to serve the LORD Jehovah on Egyptian soil.)

C. Moses and Aaron said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Let us go, for three days in the desert and sacrifice offerings to the LORD our God: For if we don't, he may send disease or a war to kill us." (Note: The excuses of Moses and Aaron were if there were no sacrifices offered by the Hebrew people they would die of disease or war. The religious symbol of offering sacrifice is to please their God.)

D. And the King of Egypt said, "Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the Hebrew people from their work? get back to work! (Note: Pharaoh was using the Hebrew people to build Egypt's buildings and palaces. The Hebrew people were slaves. Instead the Hebrew people needed their own land to build their own palaces, houses, government, and etc.)

E. "There are many Hebrews and you want them to stop working?' (Note: We know work is important, but your spiritual needs cannot be neglected. The reasons to worship God is known. Moses and Aaron gave Pharaoh spiritual reasons to worship God for three days. Pharaoh in his stubbornness didn't care for the Hebrew religious rights of worship and was inconsiderate for the Hebrew day of rest. Selfish is the King of Egypt and this selfishness will add the plagues to the land of Egypt.)
