CWFI Devotional Guide of October 2009 David's Appointment Part Two I Samuel 17

David Faces Goliath

Dr. Phillip Clark
I Samuel 17

A. (Note: David didn't try to remind King Saul the rumors of rewards of who kills Goliath. But David is operating in courage to put an end to the defying Goliath.)

B. Saul tried dressing David in his armor but it was to heavy. (Note: The very armor David once carried for King Saul didn't suit him. Although David was anointed king, his time hasn't flourished yet.)

C. David drops the armor. He instead picks up his shepherds staff and chooses five smooth stones from the brook and puts them in his bag, he takes up his sling, and then went to meet the Philistine. (Note: David has a staff, a bag with five smooth stones from the brook and his sling shot. Goliath happens to have four other brothers that David is prepared to stone if they happen to show up.)

D. At the time Goliath was coming closer to David . A man walked before Goliath carrying his shield. Then Goliath noticed David was a boy and said, "Do you suppose I'am a dog that you fight me with a staff?" He cursed David using the names of his gods and said to David, "I'll feed your carcase to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field."

E. David said, "You come to fight with two spears and a sword, but I come in the name of the God of Hosts, the God of Israels armies. For today I shall kill you and cut off your head and feed the bodies of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and wild beasts. For the battle belongs to the God of Israel and he conquers without swords and spears."

F. Goliath drew closer to attack, but David ran up to him quickly, took a stone out of his bag, placed it in the forehead of the giant Goliath, sending Goliath falling face forward to the ground. (Note: David had another talent with the sling, and in the entertainment business playing the harp.)

G. The Philistine is killed with the sling and a stone. Then David stands beside the Philistine body, and removes his sword from the sheath and confirms the death of the Philistine with the sword by cutting off his head.

H. The Philistine army realized their champion was dead, they ran as far to the City of Gath and Ekron. the Israelites chased the Philistines. And their bodies lay on the road of Shaaraim unto Gath and Ekron. The Israelites plundered the deserted camps of the Philistines.

I. David carried Goliath's head to Jerusalem and placed Goliath's weapons in his tent. (David didn't accuse anyone of being cowards, but saw victory.)(Note: Saul didn't offer any rewards that was offered earlier. There were rumors circulating about anyone winning the victory over Goliath would be rewarded.)

J. (Note: Goliath fought many battles, but lack wisdom on how to conquer David and his sling shot and stone.)

K. David continued to be promoted, trusted, and an military strategist of excellence. David gained experience in hand to hand combat to fulfill the role and the anointed calling on his life. He also increased intelligently and spiritually. David gained the skills he needed as a king.

M. (Note: David was an armor-bearer for Saul and quite familiar with its weight. But as a Bethlemite, instead of hand to hand combat use a sling-shot. For behold not even Goliath figured a sling shot could sling a rock and hit a target two hundred feet away.
