Cyber Monday Deals: How to Get the Online Deals Before They Are Sold Out

Tips and Tricks from and Experienced Online Shopper

Cyber Monday is a relative new shopping experience which occurs on the first Monday immediately after Black Friday. This unofficial shopping holiday allows shoppers a second attempt to purchase holiday gifts which may have been out of stock during Black Friday's in-store sales. Additionally, it provides an opportunity for Thanksgiving travelers, or those who did not make it to the Black Friday sales to have a chance to get some great deals. There are some downsides though: while many early-morning Black Friday shoppers had to compete with each other shoppers in local retail stores, Cyber Monday's online shoppers face stiffer competition from shoppers nationwide; so early planning is necessary to ensure desired merchandise and purchases will arrive in time for holiday gift giving.

A key to understand merchants' sales is to know how they operate their online storefronts. While some merchants allow online sales to commence at midnight, other retailers believe in starting sales at 2 a.m. and beyond. Moreover, the various time zones play an important part with respect to a store's online sale, as many retailers begin their sale time based on geographical and physical company location while other online merchants will wait until 2 a.m. Pacific time in order to change sale prices on websites and ensure all customers have a designated time to shop. Plan for most retailers to begin Cyber Monday sales between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m. Eastern time.

While waiting, for a sale to begin, make good use of your time. Find out shipping costs, coupon codes, and acceptable forms of payment ahead of time. Also, compare prices: while a half-off sale may seem like a bargain, items may carry a hefty shipping charge. To prepare, make a list of three similar items featured in Cyber Monday sales and check the overall price; including tax and shipping.

While researching, be sure to investigate coupon codes ahead of time. Be sure to look for any restrictions such as payment options and minimum purchase amounts before using a coupon. This research will save time and allow shoppers to take advantage of speedy checkout or one-click buying options. This is important because some retailers will empty a shopper's basket after 15 minutes due to inactivity. Should this happen, your sale items may be taken by another customer or sold. Be prepared ahead of time and have all online coupon codes researched and written down next to a specified merchant's name; including details of the coupon.

On the day of the sale (Cyber Monday), log on to the site at least an hour ahead of time. This extra time allowance will ensure any computer problems are resolved (or allows time to move to another computer) and be sure to open each site's window to be able to switch between different sites should an item be sold out.

Before the actual sale starts, you may want to try to add the sale item to your cart. Getting up an hour ahead of time allows plenty of preparation time to ensure item availability. By adding the items to your online shopping cart ahead of time, you are bettering your chances that the item is in stock and reserved. In order to keep the item(s) reserved, make sure to click on the refresh button every ten or so minutes to keep the item in your cart. This constant refreshing will notify you when the actual sale begins, as the price will adjust in your cart; so be sure to enter in the coupon code too!

If you have an unsuccessful first try, make sure to have a back-up plan. If after trying to get that great deal, you are not able to get the first choice on your list, refer back to your list of the top three similar items sold at different online retailers and visit one of them. While you may have to pay a few dollars more for the item or shipping charges, Cyber Monday sales are some of the best online shopping deals during the holiday season.
