Cyber Spying to Be Biggest Security Risk to America in 2008, Study Says
The press release indicated that the study found there are 120 countries throughout the world that are using the Internet for espionage operations on the web. A large amount of these cyber attacks originate in the country of China in Asia. These cyber attacks are no longer just teenagers playing around, they now include targets such as electricity grids, air traffic control, financial markets, and the government computer networks according to the report from McAfee. These attacks are now well-funded and organized by strongly organized groups, when it used to be teenagers testing what they could get away with.
"Cybercrime is now a global issue," said Jeff Green, senior vice president of McAfee Avert Labs and product development. "It has evolved significantly and is no longer just a threat to industry and individuals but increasingly to national security. We're seeing emerging threats from increasingly sophisticated groups attacking organizations around the world. Technology is only part of the solution, and over the next five years as we'll start to see international governments take action," Green said.
These threats are evolving as technology evolves. With the advancement of Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), cyber criminals are finding ways to hack into phone networks and use them for international phone calls costing large amounts of money. Peer-to-Peer and social networking websites are becoming more popular, and the criminals are not blind to them either. According to the press release 50 percent of all data breaches have been through peer-to-peer software.
Even if a massive cyber attack does not occur in 2008, the risk is greatly increasing. The cyber criminals are taking advantage of their ability to use this technology for illegal activities. No longer are these groups just small under funded groups. The report from McAfee makes it clear that as some of these groups are sponsored by government groups around the world, their ability to threaten U.S. computer and worldwide computer security has increased.
