Cyber Stalking - How to Avoid It

joanne pace
With the Internet being the new way to communicate with friends and family and a way to make new friends, one thing we must all do is protect ourselves from those who want to do us harm. There are so many ways to access the Internet, by computer, laptop, PDA (personal digital assistant), and cell phone. There are people out there that do not care about you other than to get what you have, even if that is your sanity. There are bullies out there that just like to pick on people in person, then there are bullies out there that found a new and better way to cause harm to a person, they are cyber stalkers.

They stalk you over the internet, email, on twitter, Facebook, MySpace, any way they can. These people get there thrills in making you miserable. They can stalk you in chat rooms, forums, instant messaging and all the other social arenas on the Internet. Whether it is by filling your email with spam, which is not as common as other offensive emails. They may post bad comments on your MySpace page or a number of other things they can think of to make you look bad to others or just to make you constantly look over your shoulder wondering who is watching or following you.

You need to protect your personal information. There are many ways that you can surf the Internet anonymously using a proxy server. That is exactly how a cyber bully protects his identity, through anonymous proxy servers. That way he cannot be traced and therefore not prosecuted. You should secure your Internet connection to begin with, especially if you have a wireless router or modem. You should not have account information or passwords stored on your computer where anyone can gain access to them. Go to the free email sites and get an account there to deal with anyone on the Internet, including the email account you use for MySpace or Face Book. Those are permanent accounts and can give a cyber stalker too much information about you.

Just like a bully down the block who only threatens you, then one day decides to take action, a cyber stalker may go from just stalking you on the internet to stalking you in real life if he can get a hold of enough of your information. Keep the information that you post online on your MySpace or Face Book pages impersonal. Only give personal information or where you like to chat to people you know personally and can trust. If you already have a lot of personal information on your MySpace or other social sites, get an email account from Yahoo or Google or AOL and remake your page. Don't allow your profile to be seen by people that are not in your contact list.

Find a good anonymous proxy server and only surf the Internet while connected to the proxy server. Check the proxy sites also. There are many ways to test your connection available on these sites. But check the site you are using regularly to make sure it too is secure.
