Cyberspace Vixen: Weaving a Web of Love, Desire and Deception

HMCS

You could say Jamo was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His parents owned and operated a car dealership for over 30 years in the Washington, DC area. His folks were near retirement age and were grooming him, their only child, to take over the company. But Jamo had other ideas and had no interest in running the company. When his parents would leave him in charge of the dealership, he would duck and doge out of doing any type of task which was required of him. Most of the time, he would get the other employees to do his work. Jamo was as smooth and slippery as an eel. If he could get out of doing any type of work, he would. His paternal grandparents, who were now deceased, had set up a trust fund which he could not draw from until he was 26 years of age. They believed at this age, their grandson would be more mature at managing and investing his money sensibly. Jamo did receive a monthly allowance from his parents, but it was nowhere near the amount of money he was going to receive from his trust fund. He figured when he got his money, he would fly the coop, travel the world and live the jet set lifestyle. Jamo had it all worked out and was slowly putting his plans into action.

For several years, Jamo had been attending college, but his major was a complete mystery to those who knew him. He was attending college because his parents stipulated that in order to receive his monthly allowance, he had to work at the dealership or attend college full-time. So Jamo chose the latter. But his parents never gave him a timetable to obtain his degree; so going to college became his vocation. There were times when he would cut classes and would get other students to take notes for him. On many occasions, he had paid students to do his homework and term papers. Jamo was extremely good at manipulating people, and could talk his way out of any situation. His mannerism and charm were his forte. Women would gravitate to him like groupies encircling a pop star and would do just about anything for him. There was talk around campus that many female and a few male students would offer Jamo money to spend the night with them in their dorms, and that some professors would give him a passing grade for courses which he never completed, in exchange for a night of pleasure with him. Whether these rumors were true was anyone's guess. Others would just hang on to him, because he was about to come into a big windfall. Quite frankly, no one could ever blame these people for wanting to be so close to him; after all, Jamo was a drop-dead gorgeous dude. He was tall and had the physique of an Olympic runner; he spent more time in the gym then he did in the classroom. His sense of style was laid-back; he wore his hair in long locs and kept up with the latest fashion trends. No matter what he wore, Jamo would turn heads.

It would be three months before Jamo would reach his 26th birthday. In the meantime, he started to go online making plans for his future. He couldn't decide which country to visit first. He thought about going to St. Kitts, the birthplace of his grandparents who came to the USA in the 1940's. When he was a little boy, they always talked about how beautiful and rich in history the island was, and one day he should go there, meet the other side of his family and maybe set up permanent roots there. His parents would travel back and forth to the island to check on their other businesses, a bread and breakfast inn and a high-end clothing store; they were preparing to return there to live out their retirement years. But Jamo quickly scratched that idea. He wanted to get as far away from his parents as possible. This is not to say that he didn't love or appreciate them, but his mother and father were always placing demands on him when it came to running and taking over the dealership. Jamo tried to make it crystal clear he did not want to have anything to do with the company, and if it were left up to him, he would sell the business, but his parents would continuously turn a deaf ear and couldn't seem to comprehend what Jamo was trying to convey to them. All of the other workers at the company got the message about his lack of interest in the business. Why couldn't his parents see the writing on the wall? Jamo went back to browsing the internet.

It was now summer break and most of the women that Jamo was seeing had left town. Since he wasn't planning to return to college and was leaving DC, he would never see any of his school mates or friends again. Jamo was starting to feel lonely and restless. After all, he was never without a female at his side. His cell phone was filled with numbers of college women of every age, size, shape and color. If he had the inclination, he could have started a dating, modeling or escorting service.

Nevertheless, Jamo had no choice but to work at the dealership full-time during the summer. But in two months, he would reach that magical age of 26, and it would be good bye car dealership; so long DC, and hello to all that money and a bright new beginning in a far away place. Jamo continued to do as little work as possible at the company. When his parents weren't there, he would spend time on the Internet when he was supposed to be attending to the customers. Jamo decided to check out some of the dating sites; he would smirk at some of the male profiles. He would never have to go online to find a woman; he said to himself. After all, he was a suave and sophisticated young gent. All he had to do was stroll down the street, and women would approach him without any hesitation; he believed he would have the same results on the World Wide Web. So he elected to place a personal ad on the site. After writing and fine tuning his profile, he uploaded it along with his photo. His personal ad read as follows:

Hi: My name is Jamo, and I am single. As you can see from my picture, I am a handsome and well-groomed male. My aspiration is to meet a classy and refine single female who enjoys going out and attending social functions. I attended a prestigious college in the DC area, and am currently working at my parent's car dealership. My interests are traveling, and meeting new people in far away places. In two months, I will turn 26, come into a large sum of money and plan to live abroad. If you would like to know more about me, send an e-mail along with your photo.

Jamo was quite proud of his accomplishment and knew he would receive loads of responses. After all he was the man for all females. What woman in her right mind wouldn't take action to his personal ad? His photo alone was enough to make women, young and old, fall to their knees and be at his beck and call. But little did Jamo know; there was a vixen out there plotting and planning to weave him into a web of love, desire and deception. If Jamo thought he was the master of manipulation, he was about to meet his match who would turn his hopes and dreams into a nightmarish experience.

It had been a couple of weeks since Jamo had gone online. His parents had him coming and going at the dealership. Some of the salespeople were on vacation; so he couldn't get out doing any work. By the end of the day, Jamo was exhausted. He was counting the days when he would draw on his trust fund and leave the business and DC forever.

Finally, Jamo had taken a couple days off from his job. He told his parents that he wasn't feeling well and could do some of his paper work from home. Of course, this wasn't the case. Jamo had other fish to fry. He went on his computer to check his e-mail; there must have been over 300 responses to his personal ad. He started to read through some of the messages. Most of them were sent to the trash bin and others to the maybe folder. But there was one e-mail that caught his attention, because it had an attached video clip. When he downloaded the video, it started to play:

Bonjour Jamo: Permit me to inform you of my desire to meet you. I came across your personal profile along with your stunning picture. I started to have feelings which I have never experienced in my life, and this is why I decided to get in touch with you. I can't imagine how you must feel receiving my video from a far away place. My name is Malia; I am 24 years old, 5'8" tall, never married and live in Benin. I speak French and English, and received my degree in Finance and Banking. I enjoy going out and meeting people of different cultures. I have traveled extensively and plan to visit America shortly. My interests are reading, jogging, listening to music, cooking and going to museums and plays. I sense a strong connection to you and want to get to know you better. Please tell me more about yourself, your likes and dislikes, family, country, etc. I believe we can develop a connection which might direct us to be together. I wish to let you know that sincerity is very important to me, even though we might be thousands of miles away from each other. If you would like to know more about me, please contact me soon. I'm waiting. Amour Malia.

After looking at Malia's video, Jamo was completely mesmerized by her striking beauty. She was a work of art; he thought. Her flawless skin gleamed like the Great Blue diamond. Her hair was styled in cornrows with extended interlocs. She wore a short dark green off the shoulder dress, and her deep brown eyes had an air of mystery. To say she was groomed to be a queen was no exaggeration. Jamo was hooked, and for him, it was love at first sight. He played that clip several times. No woman has never had a hold like this on him; he was the love them and leave them type of guy. He immediately deleted the remaining messages and replied to Malia.

For the next several weeks, Jamo and Malia corresponded with each other by e-mail. Malia wrote about her life growing up in Benin, the number of countries she had visited, and her job as a financial analyst for large banking and financial institutions. She had her own apartment and mentioned how one could live quite comfortably on very little money in her country. This bit of information was of interest to Jamo, since he was planning to relocate to another country. Perhaps Benin would be that place. He went on to tell Malia that he would be receiving a large sum of money from his trust fund in a couple of weeks, and perhaps he could travel to Benin for an extended vacation. Malia told him she was planning to visit DC in a week or two, would like to spend time with him and assist him with his plans for the future.

Since Jamo was still living at home with his parents, he could not invite Malia to stay with him. He decided not to tell his parents about her until he was ready to leave DC. He e-mailed Malia and recommended a nice hotel within walking distance from his home. Malia responded and gave Jamo her arrival date. She made reservations at the hotel and was due to arrive that Friday afternoon, two days before Jamo's 26th birthday.

For the next week, Jamo was on pins and needles. The staff at the company noticed a complete transformation in him. He was actually working, and at no time did he ever try to get others to take over his assignments. Some thought he was finally coming around to taking over the dealership. Since he was coming into money, he would either expand the business or open another car dealership in another locale. Whatever the reason, the staff was pleased; he was finally earning his stipend.

The day had finally arrived when Malia was due to arrive in DC. Jamo left work to meet her at the airport and arrived about 30 minutes before the plane was due to land. As he sat and waited, he contemplated as to what he was going to say to her. Jamo was never at a lost for words when it came to women. Why was he so nervous now? He was like a teen going out on his first blind date. He didn't know what to expect. The plane from Benin had landed on time. As Jamo approached the arrival gate, he saw Malia. His knees almost buckled. Her video did not do her justice; she was more stunning in person. When Malia saw Jamo, she had a smile that would have made a raging bull become docile. Jamo was frozen in time. As she approached him, she embraced him and said: I have waited all my life to meet someone like you, and I am thrilled to be here; you are my destiny. Jamo quickly replied by saying: the feeling is mutual. He asked her how her flight went, and she replied: there was much turbulence, but I kept gazing at your photo, and my fears had completely vanished.

If Jamo had any qualms about what he was going to say, her demeanor and expressions squashed those doubts. When the two of them got into a cab at the airport, Jamo never stopped talking until they arrived at the hotel. Malia checked in, and Jamo escorted her to her room. She was tired from the long flight and told Jamo she wanted to unpack, take a shower and rest for about an hour. Jamo told her he would leave and come back, and they could have dinner at the hotel or at a local restaurant. She wanted to have dinner in her room, and asked Jamo to join her. He obliged and would return in two hours. Jamo went home to freshen up but couldn't decide what to wear. He looked into his closet which had more clothes than a men's fashion warehouse. After trying on several outfits, he decided on a navy blue suit with a light blue shirt and a red tie. Jamo definitely wanted to make a good impression with Malia.

Malia was well rested and ready to weave her scheme into place. She showered her body with a jasmine scented fragrance and opted to wear a sexy red bustier, hip hugging black leather pants and red high heel pumps. For dinner, she ordered tossed salad with French dressing, baked oysters topped with garlic sauce, steamed asparagus, baguette and a chilled bottle of sparkling wine. Dessert would be chocolate covered strawberries dipped in whipped cream.

Jamo had arrived at the hotel; the clerk at the desk rang Malia to inform her that her guess had arrived and was on his way to her suite. When Jamo got to her room, he knocked on the door. When she opened the door, for a split second, Jamo thought he had died and gone to heaven; he actually had a euphoric episode. Malia kissed him and led him into the room where dinner was waiting. Jamo quickly came back to earth. He complimented Malia on her attire; he was definitely turned on by her. Whether it was the outfit, the jasmine scent, the food or the dessert, Jamo was completely under her spell. Malia did most of the talking. Since Jamo had told her that in two days he would receive one million dollars from his trust fund, she came up with ways in which he could invest his money and make it grow. And if he wanted to, he could come to Benin and live there for a while to get a feel for the place. She told him that he could transfer his money into any commercial bank or set up a brokerage account. Once an account was set up, he could have a set amount of money wired to him at any bank, no matter where he was. Jamo thought this was an excellent idea. Malia had asked Jamo to spend the night with her. He did, and it was a night he would never fail to remember. The two made intense love until they both fell asleep.

When Jamo woke up Saturday morning, he was re-energized. He had fallen hard for Malia. He did not want to leave her. He called his parents to let them know that he would be coming home later that evening. The two of them made passionate love again until mid-afternoon. They order lunch and talk again about Jamo strategies and resumed making love again until the early evening. Jamo was deeply in love with Malia. There was no doubt he was going to spend the rest of his life with this woman. The passion she exuberated was just overwhelming; if he tried to, he just couldn't resist her. Malia was now his aphrodisiac. If Malia told Jamo to jump into the Potomac River, blindfolded and naked, he would have obeyed her. The two of them decided to go out to dinner that evening. Jamo went home to change and told his parents that he would be home very late. They reminded him that plans were being made for his birthday on Sunday and hoped he would be home in time for the celebration. He assured them that he would.

Malia and Jamo dined at an intimate restaurant near the campus. He explained to her that he attended that college but didn't plan to get his degree; he was going to school to placate his parents and to receive his monthly pocket money. But starting Sunday, he would be on his own, and be able to make his own decisions without interference from his parents. Malia listened very carefully to Jamo's ramblings. At this point, she maneuvered the conversation back to his trust fund. She informed him that she'll only be staying in DC for the next several days and advised him that since the trust fund is already at the local bank, all he would have to do is open a personal account and move the money into that account. When you're readyI'll go with you to the bank; she said. Jamo said that he would go to the bank on Monday morning and follow her recommendations. Malia invited him back to her room; they made hot and steamy love again until the wee hours of the night.

Jamo had arrived home at about 2 a.m. Sunday morning. He was so exhausted that when his head hit the pillow, he fell asleep instantly. When he woke up, he got up, took a shower and got dress. He wondered what his parents had in store for him. It was pretty quiet throughout the house. He went downstairs, and walked into the living room. There was a gathering of people shouting surprise! They started to sing happy birthday. Jamo was shocked, and when he checked the time, it was after 6 p.m.; he didn't realize he had slept so late. Everyone congratulated him on reaching his 26th birthday and wished him many more years and best wishes. The employees, customers and business associates were all there at the festivity. Jamo was in high spirits but sad at the same time, because Malia wasn't there. But that didn't matter, because he was going to be spending the rest of his life with her; he assumed.

It was getting late, and the guests were starting to leave. Jamo thanked everyone for coming and thanked his parents for a lovely evening. His parents inquired as to what he was going to do with his money; he replied: invest the money wisely. They smiled and nodded with approval and said: your grandparents would be very proud of you if they were here. You were their only grandchild, and they wanted to make certain that you were provided with all the means to live a good and productive life.

Jamo's grandparents were entrepreneurs and owned several successful businesses in St. Kitts. When they came to this country, their goal was to open a real estate agency, and they did. Their son, Jamo's father, who grew up in the sixties, obtain his degree in Business Administration. While in college, he met his wife, who came from a very prominent family in the DC area. The couple ended up working in the real estate business. After the death of Jamo's grandparents, his parents inherited the real estate company but sold it, and with the proceeds from the sale, they started a car dealership which grew into a very successful enterprise.

Jamo's parents went on to say that they would retire in two years and return to St. Kitts and expected him to take over ownership of the business. Jamo sat there unenthusiastically, grinning like a Chester shire feline. It was now about 10 pm. Jamo said goodnight to his parents and went to his room. He was thinking about Malia and called her. They chatted for about an hour. He told her that he would meet her at the hotel in the morning, and they would go straight to the bank.

Monday morning was here, and Jamo was ready to leave. His parents wanted to know if he was joining them for breakfast; but he declined. He told them he was taking the day off to take care of business. He met Malia at the hotel, and they went to the bank. He spoke to the bank manager and told him he wanted to open a personal account and requested that his money be deposited into that account. The bank manager suggested that he open a brokerage account. Malia quickly interrupted and said Jamo will need more time to think about that; she was his financial adviser and would make suggestions on the best brokerage houses. The manager sat there with confusion in his face and was trying to figure out who this woman was; and when did she become Jamo's mouthpiece. After all, the manager knew Jamo and his family for many years. It was understood that the money from the trust fund would hopefully remain in his bank. If the bank manager was baffled, it wouldn't be long before the rest of the community would be thrown for a loop.

One million dollars was moved into Jamo's personal account. He and Malia thanked the manager, left the bank and went back to the hotel. The two of them celebrated by toasting each other with champagne; Malia reminded him to open an online account with his bank. It was more convenient and easier to transfer funds without having to always go to the bank; she emphasized. They then went to bed and made love for the remaining afternoon. While in bed, Jamo asked Malia to marry him. She accepted his proposal with steadfast bliss. Malia told him again that she was going to send him information on the best brokerages houses, and not to do anything with the money until he heard from her. He said: okay my love.

Malia received a phone called. She must have been on the phone for almost 30 minutes. Jamo was getting dress and was planning to take her out to dinner. When Malia got off the phone, she informed him that she had to return to Benin immediately due to a family emergency. She reassured him that it wasn't serious. Jamo understood but wanted to go with her. She reminded him that he would need a passport, which he did not have, an international certificate of vaccination for various shots and a visa if he was going to remain in the country for an extended period of time. She said: all of this takes time, and you can take care of that while I am gone, and when I come back, we can leave together for Benin. Malia was able to get a flight out the next day. She asked Jamo to spend the night, and he did.

It was Tuesday morning, and Malia was all packed and ready to go. Jamo called a cab, and they rode to the airport and arrived two hours before the plane was scheduled to leave. They had breakfast at the terminal. Malia said she was going to pine for Jamo, but as soon as she got home, she would e-mail him. Jamo said he would be waiting. Malia said she loved him, and couldn't wait to be his wife and be with him without end. It was now time for Malia to board the plane. He walked her to the departure gate, gave her an adoring kiss, and said he would be waiting for her return. She said au revoir and got on the plane; it took off for Benin. That would be the last time Jamo would see her. He left the airport, went home and started to make plans to be with Malia. Late that evening, Jamo went on his computer and received an e-mail from Malia to let him know that she had arrived safely at home, and she would e-mail him in a couple of days. He never told his parents or anyone else about Malia and decided to wait a little longer before he sprung the news.

Jamo's parents had made plans to go to St. Kitts for vacation, and asked him to take over the business while they were gone. They were going to be gone for one month. This time, he didn't mind, since he knew it was just a matter of time before he would be gone for good. He went to work, but couldn't concentrate; he was always thinking about Malia. For the next several weeks, Jamo was busy and didn't have much time to obtain his passport. He and Malia were e-mailing each other just about every other day; she told him there was no rush to make travel plans. Malia said she was putting together a brokerage account kit and would send it by snail mail in a couple of weeks. She was planning to come back to DC in two months. So he put off taking care of the move to Benin. He bought an engagement ring which cost about $50,000.00. He would give it to Malia when she came back, but her staying with Jamo at his parent's house wouldn't be possible. So he went apartment hunting and found a one bedroom pad in a nice turn of the century building. Since he didn't know how long he and Malia would be in town, he chose a month to month tenancy. He put down a one month security deposit and paid six months rent in advance.

The community in which Jamo and his parents lived in was like a small village. Everybody knew everyone's business. And if a person didn't know anything, one was sure to make up something. It wasn't long before gossip started to permeate the neighborhood. There was talk that Jamo had a woman in his life; but no one had a clue as to who she was. Some saw Jamo going in and out of the hotel with a strange female, and she wasn't from the community. There were even whispers that he was seeing a married woman, since their meetings were so secretive. But the gossip really heated up when it was discovered that Jamo had purchased an expensive three carat diamond ring. Everyone was wondering; did he buy the ring for this woman, and if so, she was one of the lucky ones. But what people didn't realize was that this lucky woman was a devious con-art who would leave everybody in the neighborhood scratching their heads and talking for months to come.

Jamo's parents had returned from their vacation. They inquired as to how things went while they were away, and Jamo said that all went well. Sales were extremely good, he told them. They were very pleased. They did have a question about the new woman in his life. Jamo was taken aback and wondered how they knew. They reminded him that news travels. Jamo couldn't believe this, since he never discussed Malia to anyone. He said she was someone he met on the internet; she came to DC on business for a couple of days and went back home. He assured them it wasn't serious. His parents did not press the issue any further. He may have thought his parents fell for that story, but they weren't that naïve.

Later on that evening, Jamo went on the internet to sign up for banking online, just like Malia instructed him to do. He came up with a username and password. Now he could transfer money anywhere without having to go to the bank in person. He e-mailed Malia and informed her that he took her advice and opened an online account. She e-mailed him back and said that was great, and as she promised had mailed him the information, and he should get the packet in about two weeks.

A month had past and life was really looking great for Jamo. He was going back and forth to the new apartment. He purchased a bedroom set, a sofa and two love seats. He also bought a nice dining room set. He wanted the place to look like a palace for his queen, but did not want to add too many items, since the two of them would only be living there for the short term. When they were ready to leave for Benin, the furniture would be placed in storage or shipped at a later date. Jamo had gone back to work and went online to check his e-mails. He did not receive any messages from Malia but did receive the following message:

Dear Valued Banking Customer: It has come to our attention that your bank account information needs to be updated as part of our continuing commitment to protect your account and to reduce the instances of fraud on our website. Jamo immediately clicked on the link, enter his username and password, followed the instructions and updated his account. He log off and continued his work.

The package from Malia had arrived. It included prospectus on several brokerage houses and mutual funds. While reading the booklets, Jamo had troubled deciphering the information. He figured he would wait for Malia to explain it to him, since she was an expert in financial jargon. He put the pamphlets aside and went online and sent an e-mail to Malia, thanking her for the information and was looking forward to seeing her soon.

It was now October, and Jamo realized that he hadn't heard from Malia. He went online to see if there were any messages from her, but there weren't. He couldn't call her because he forgot to ask for her phone number. He needed to know her flight schedule and arrival date, so he could make arrangements to meet her at the airport and take her to their new apartment. He did not want her to make hotel reservations and then have to cancel them. He decided to go to the hotel to see if she had made any reservations; she didn't. He sent an e-mail asking for her itinerary. He still heard nothing. He was beginning to wonder if something had happen to her. Maybe that call she received was worst than she had let on. He didn't know what to think.

But the biggest shock came when he got a statement from the bank indicating that his personal account was closed. He stared to get palpitations of the heart. Jamo thought this was an error on the bank's part. He immediately went to the bank and asked for the manager. Jamo implied that the bank made a gross error and showed the statement to the manger; he said it was not a mistake and that Jamo had transferred all of his money into a bank in Benin. Jamo vehemently denied doing such a transaction; he never came into the bank to perform such a matter. The manager informed him that it was done over the internet. Jamo replied impossible; he would never transfer that much money at one time. But someone did, the manager said. Jamo started to get sick to his stomach and felt a headache coming. How could this have happened? Then he remembered receiving that e-mail from the bank. He went back home to retrieve a copy of the e-mail from his computer. He showed the e-mail to the manager who said the bank never sent that e-mail. Any e-mail sent to their customers would always include their full name in the salutation, and not the words dear banking customer, and the web site would always show a secured key, which would indicate it is a safe server to conduct business. The manager said you were a victim of phishing. When you clicked on that link, you virtually gave the cyberspace thieves all the information they needed to get into your account. Jamo sat there in a stupor. Jamo asked who would do such a despicable act, and can the person(s) who did this be arrested and brought to justice, and will I get my money back? The manager looked at him with pity and replied: the answer is no; most of these people operate outside of the USA, and there is nothing the law can do; they have no jurisdiction to go into another country and press charges or retrieve your money. Jamo was confused and angry. He asked the manager if there was anyway to tell where the e-mail came from, but the manager couldn't help him. The bank manager finally told him that whoever stole the money had probably left that country. Usually when the money is received, the person will close the account and disappear.

He decided to go online to see if there was an e-mail from Malia. There wasn't. He was really starting to worry. Why hadn't Malia contacted him? He checked the envelope, which Malia had sent him, for a return address; there was none. Then he remembered that the money was deposited into a Benin bank account. It had finally dawned on him; Malia had stolen his money. Jamo wondered how he could have been taken in by such a person. He was a sap that got duped by a cyberspace vixen. He was so distraught; he didn't know what to do. He thought about all of the dim-witted things he had done, namely purchasing a ring, renting an apartment and putting in time and effort into furnishing the place. He had done all of this for a woman who didn't even give a hoop about him. In hindsight, the warning signs were there: her haste to come to DC, the interest in his trust fund, the so called emergency call she received and her persistence in creating an online banking account. But he was blinded by love and passion. He was so good at maneuvering people, but he couldn't envision being manipulated by Malia. When Jamo was a little, he would always hear his grandparents say: you get back what you give. He thought about those words and wondered was this his reprimand for all the cunning acts he had done in the past. Jamo was now wondering what he was going to tell his parents. Sooner or later, they were going to find out. If they knew about Malia, it wouldn't be long before they would find out about his dilemma. How do you tell your folks that you lost close to a million dollars at the click of a mouse?

When his parents arrived home, he sat them down and told them what had happened. His parents were literally in a state of shock; he saw the disappointment in their faces. What more could he say, but that he was sorry for bringing such shame on the family name. His parents had such high hopes for him, and wondered if he would ever be ready to take over the business. They came to the conclusion that their son had a long way to go before he would reach full maturity and was glad that his grandparents weren't around to see this awful situation, because they would have been disenchanted. His parents gave him an ultimatum: he would continue to go to college and get his and still receive a monthly allowance until he was reading to take over the business, or he would be completely on his own with no financial assistance. Jamo chose to go back to college.

It was just a matter of time before rumors were starting to spread like wild throughout the community. Folks from all social circles were chitchatting about Jamo being duped by a foreign woman. Many found it quite amusing that a man, who was supposed to be so shrewd, would be outwitted by a female. And some saw it as payback for his treatment of others. The campus was buzzing with innuendoes that Jamo was hiding his money in an offshore account to avoid paying taxes. Some went as far to say there was never a trust fund, and he made up the whole story to be popular with the women and part of the inner circle. Several of the women on campus didn't want to have anything to do with him. Perhaps they were jealous because it wasn't any of them who got his money or that expensive diamond ring. Those who were once his closest friends were disassociating themselves from him. Jamo became the abandoned man on campus and the laughing stock of the community. When the money was gone, so were his friends. Whether Jamo learned anything from this horrific experience is anyone's guess.
