Cycling Guide: Perigord Noir, Dordogne, France

Bike Through One of France's Most Scenic Areas

Erika Northman
When it comes to a great place to bike in France, I immediately think of Dordogne (of which Perigord noir is a part). I recall absolutely gorgeous scenery but not so crowded roads. The towns aren't too spread out. It is known to have some of the best cuisine in France. Plus there are multitudes of castles, ancient towns and caves to explore throughout the region.

Exploring Perigord nord by bike is an excellent option. If you are like me, often finding yourself living to eat, such a trek allows us to experience the gastronomic delights of the region without guilt or worry. You can plan your own bike tour or join a guided tour. A quick Internet search will reveal that cycling tours are plentiful in the region. If you want the convenience and excitement of heading out on your own with some of the benefits of a guided tour such as help with prepaid reservations and roadside assistance, a self-guided tour such as Outfitter Bicycle Tours provides might be what you are looking for. Whether you plan your own tour or join a guided tour, there are many sights to consider in the region. Surely, one such highlight is the town of Sarlat. The town has been so well-preserved that it's like entering the middle ages. They have a fantastic market on Saturdays. Other enchanting old towns to explore are La Roque Gageac, Souillac, Beynac, Les Eyzies, Belves, Domme & St. Leon sur Vezere. As you travel, you will be sure to notice the postcard beautiful French countryside and an abundance of castles. A non-traditional favorite of mine is the 1920s African American Josephine Baker's Chateau de Milandes. To view a map of castles in the area, please click here.

In addition to the ancient towns and castles, there are the caves showcasing prehistoric art. The most famous is, of course, Lascaux which is no longer open to the public. Its prehistoric art has been recreated in intricate detail and a superb guided tour is available. More caves and prehistoric art is scattered throughout the region. Click here to view a detailed map showing the locations of such caves throughout the region.
