Cycling in New Zealand: Wellington New Zealand Cycling Routes

S. Gustafson
Cycling in New Zealand has been very popular for decades. The great climate lends itself well to this type of recreation, as do the great roads and beautiful scenery. Cycling in New Zealand has been especially popular in the capital city Wellington. Wellington New Zealand is a beautiful and peaceful location for cycling in New Zealand. The locals of the capital city Wellington New Zealand love to use the many wonderful bike routes. The transportation laws in the city Wellington are very accommodating towards cyclists, more so than other sites for cycling in New Zealand. Cyclers are allowed to bring bikes on the trains, cable cars and the Wellington New Zealand East Harbor Fairy.

There are dozens of great cycling routes in Wellington New Zealand, but the following are my personal favorites:

Mt. Victoria

This is one of my favorite cycling routes in Wellington New Zealand, because it offers a beautiful view of the capital city Wellington. Road bikers will prefer sticking to Newtown side of Alexandria road. They can follow the road up to the beautiful scenic outlook on Mt. Victoria. Those with mountain bikes will enjoy using this route as a warm-up. The round trip up Alexandria road, to the Mt. Victoria lookout and back usually takes from 30-40 minutes, making for a wonderful short route for cycling in New Zealand.

The mountain biker can cut straight from the Mt. Victoria lookout to an off road track that connects to Alexandria Road. After turning left, bikers will experience a thrilling descent down Mt. Victoria. After 300 meters, bikers may choose to go left or right at the fork in the Mt. Victoria cycling routes. The left track is more challenging and involves many ups and downs on the side of Mt. Victoria, while the right track links back up with the other cycling routes.

Another one of the Mt. Victoria cycling routes takes bikers through the soccer fields at Wellington New Zealand College, and past the entrance to the old Chest Hospital in Wellington New Zealand.

Southern Walkway

Also near Mt. Victoria, the Southern Walkway cycling routes are the best cycling routes in Wellington New Zealand for families. This is because they are not extremely hilly and can be broken up into even shorter cycling routes. The Southern Walkway cycling routes start at the intersection of Crawford and Wellington Roads. Bikers can follow Manchester Road past the Wellington New Zealand zoo (where families may want to stop for a visit) and through the scenic Melrose Park. Signs mark the rest of the Southern Walkway cycling routes in Wellington New Zealand. These cycling routes traverse around Mt. Victoria, Mt. Albert and Island Bay.

The Mt. Victoria and Southern Walkway cycling routes are just a few of many in Wellington New Zealand. Cycling in New Zealand, and especially Wellington is a pleasant way to enjoy time with family, see beautiful scenery and get a good workout!
