it was not luck that brought us here
but fortitude
no universal plan drawn out
no stars lined up in strict perfection
no high and holy
DEITY
who scrawled our names on scraps of paper
drew them out and said-
"these two."
it was not fortune, fate or grace
but mercy
given to ourselves
the strength and gentleness to walk ahead
and leave what's done
behind
it was not destiny that told us
to forget the things we'd learned to hate
to discard the imperfections and to accept
what we had found-
not through prayer or chosen path but through
ourselves alone, the chemicals
that recognized
the language spoken,
synapse jumping, synapse linking
synapse linking synapse
linking heart
it was not separated souls or
preordained that we would be here
but the logic and the wisdom
to recognize the joy
that we could be.
