In order to perform this job they were bred for nimbleness and the ability to move freely. Its face is very expressive. This was over 300 years ago. If you consider a dachshund to be part of your household, you will have a loyal and loving companion.
Its conformation is very low to the ground and is long. A Dachshund very muscular and comes in two sizes, miniature and standard. Miniatures weigh at 11 pounds and standards weigh between 16 and 32 pounds.
Dachshunds come in a variety of colors. The most common are red and red with black. Other colors of Dachshunds are: cream, wild boar (a reddish color, chocolate brown, fawn and lighter boar. Piebald, brindle (black and dark stripes occur over the body, and sable are common as well.
They possess a smooth, wirehaired or long haired coat. A smooth coated Dachshund has a shiny coat and its ears are not leathery. The most common type of Dachshund is the smooth coated. The wired haired dachshund reminds me of a Scottie dog... When looking at this type of dog you will notice that the tail narrows to a point. It has long hair on its stomach. They have a strapping jaw and lips.
Other physical characteristics are that it s muzzle is curved and its eyes are almond in shape. The skin of the Dachshund is loose, so that it will not tear when hunting prey in tunnels. When looking a Dachshund you will also notice that the shoulder blades are long as well as physically powerful hindquarters. The tail was used as a handle to grasp in order to tow the Dachshund out of a burrow or den. It should not have any twists or kinks.
I bought my dog Oliver in 1987 and he was a great pet. He was very loving, extremely playful and devoted to my family. My dachshund, Oliver, guarded my mom diligently all the time. I have very fond memories of my Dachshund Oliver. In fact, he would run in circles around my backyard. Because they are bred to hunt, they move very quickly. They also retrieve things very quickly as well.
This type of dog has powerful jaws. So be careful around its mouth. Also a Dachshund can be very territorial. I remember Oliver not wanting to go in or out of the kitchen. I think he felt that he owned my family instead of us owning him. He also was not afraid of bigger dogs.
Oliver passed away at the age of 18. He had a long and happy life frolicking in the grassy and tree laden yard of mother's back yard.
