Dachshund Races Come to Huntington Beach, California
The 12th Annual Wiener Nationals Set to Take Place at Old World German Village
The Miller Brewing Company made dachshund racing popular back in the late 1990's when it held a dachshund race in Shreveport, Louisiana for a series of commercials. Racing has gained popularity across the country and many races benefit animal shelters or rescue organizations.
In 1993 Inga McKellop, the owner of a Huntington Beach coffee shop called The Coffee Mill, started the Dachshund Races of Old World German Village and she still runs it to this day. 16 wiener dogs, in 4 different weight classes, will race 20 yards through the cobble-stoned walkways of Old World German Village in pursuit of the doggy treat filled finish line while being cheered on by exuberant spectators of all ages. Their furry short legs will carry them swiftly past many delectable sights, sounds and smells in their path, but they will be focused on the encouraging trainers hoping to take home the Top Dog prize. The winner (or should I say wiener) will ride in the Oktoberfest parade with the Mayor of Huntington Beach on October 7th.
Old World German Village's Dachshund Races is fun for the entire family with free parking, $1 admission and free admission for kids under the age of 10 years old. Old World German Village is off the 405 freeway by Beach Boulevard. Their address is 7561 Center Avenue, Huntington Beach.
If you believe that your Dachshund is Top Dog and are interested in entering it in the most thrilling of races, you can find the entry form at Old World German Village's website. The entry fee is $16 and must be paid by credit card. For more information please call (714) 898-5111.
This phenomenal Dachshund racing craze does not look to be ending any time soon with races scheduled all over the United States. Huntington Beach and Old World German Village make this wiener dog event an enjoyable time for the entire family. Come down on August 19th to support your favorite wiener dog as they go for the gold!
