D'Addario EXL110 Nickel Regular Light Electric Guitar Strings: Review

Michelle Canever
Not all guitar strings are created equally, and most guitarists have their preferences. As a guitarist myself, I have a preference for acoustic and electric guitar strings. My consistent choice for electric strings is D'Addario EXL110 Nickel Regular Light strings. I've grown to love the bright tone of these babies, not to mention the good price. While I wasn't always a fan of them, it's certainly been an acquired taste for me.

Product Ratings for D'Addario EXL110 Nickel Regular Light strings:
Features: 5/5
Tone: 5/5
Price: 4/5
Overall: 4.5/5

Main Product Features:
Comprised of Nickel-plated steel, D'Addario (pronounced da-dar-e-oh) EXL110s are the choice of many musicians. The main reason why they're so often chosen above other strings is the fact that they're extremely durable and reduce fret wear on the fret board. If you've ever come across guitar strings that get dirty and break easily, which can sometimes damage the fret board, you'll know that durable strings are a big deal.

In my experience with the EXL110s, I've never had a single string break. I've kept them on for sometimes months at a time, and they've held up very well. I can't say the same thing for many other strings, however, but the EXL110s deliver.

Besides being extremely durable, the D'Addario EXL110s also offer guitarists a very bright tone. Many don't realize that guitar strings have a lot to do with your tone, so if you're wondering why your ax isn't giving you a bright enough sound, it's probably because your strings simply don't have a bright tone. The EXL110s give a bright tone that lasts even after the strings have been on the guitar for a while.

Another great feature of the EXL110s is the fact that they can be put on virtually any brand and type of electric guitar, be it a Gibson Les Paul or a Fender Telecaster. Even knock-off Les Pauls and Strats can sound great with a nice, fresh set of D'Addario EXL110s on them.

String gauge matters a lot, and one thing guitarists love about the EXL110s-and I do as well-is that they're light gauge. They're not so heavy that you cannot solo on them, while they're not so light that you can easily bend and break the strings. Quite simply, they're the perfect in between string, ideal for guitarists who play modern rock, classic rock, and yes, even heavy metal. I've also found that they work great with any gauge pick, whether it's heavy or extra light.

One thing that is disappointing about the D'Addario EXL110s is that they are a little bit pricey. Coming in at $5.49 a set, there are much cheaper strings on the market, and for those who change their strings very often, they may want to pass over the EXL110s. However, they're definitely worth the extra cost, as they won't need to be changed quite as often as ordinary strings.

Price: $5.49 a set

Overall:
I will probably always swear by the D'Addario EXL110s because they've never let me down. With a nice, bright tone, comprised of nickel-plated steel, they give me just the sound I need from my strings. I like the fact that I've never had a single broken string with them, which is why I'd highly recommend these to any guitarist, whether they're a beginner or a pro. Don't let the somewhat pricey cost scare you off from these strings.
