Daddy Doesn't Kiss Mommy Right

Words from a 3 Year Old

My daughter has never been one to mince words. I discovered this trait that sometimes has caused me great embarrassment in public places when she was very young. If the thought came into her mind it always came out of her mouth.

I think the most awkward moment with her brutal honesty came when she was about 3 years old. We had recently welcomed the arrival of a long awaited niece and as far as my daughter was concerned that baby was reason enough for her to have a baby sister.

Somewhere during the pregnancy of my sister-in-law, my daughter had picked up at daycare that babies are made when a mommy and daddy kiss, but it wasn't any kiss, they had to kiss exactly the right way. At the age our daughter was at the time, we figured that was quite an adequate explanation and left it at that.

This idea worked out nicely until one night we had gone to dinner with family and friends. Our niece was a couple of months old and as most women do, I was fussing over the baby when my brother-in-law decided to ask when I was going to have a baby. Before I could shoot him a dirty look, as the last thing on my mind with a full time job and full time school schedule at the local community college was having a baby. My daughter had been a package deal, she arrived with her daddy. My new husband had custody of his children and so, I was barely figuring out how to be a wife, mother, student and also hold down a job. I wasn't managing any of them very well. My daughter answered the question.

"Mommy doesn't have a baby in her tummy, because daddy doesn't kiss her right." I am not sure if that was a statement or an accusation toward her father but there it was, for my mother-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law and a few family friends in the middle of a crowded restaurant.

I had two choices, crawl under the table or look at my poor bewildered husband and say "See honey, you just aren't getting it right."

Today, my daughter is 16 and still just as vocal, but luckily she has gotten over the idea that she is getting a baby sister. Too bad she doesn't still believe that babies are made from kissing.
