Dad's Poem

Father's Day Poetry at Its Most Precious

Tina Herzog
With Father's Day upon me, I await the usual commotion to commence.
Gifts to unwrap, cards to read, and maybe a home cooked meal.

Gathering my energy, I exit my room--listening for the oncoming train.
Children popping out of every corner trying to give that "surprise" feel.

The surprise was on me, for no kids were around-- just yet.
They are probably stationed around the table with the pancakes and toast.

I enter the kitchen, again I am alone--making the coffee I need to refuel.
They must be in the living room planning our day, that is what they like most.

The living room was silent as I settled in with the paper.
The kids are decorating my car or dare I dream--washing it?

After the news I headed to the porch, putting on my slippers and opening the door.
There my vehicle sits; untouched. I was starting to wonder, I must admit.

I ventured upstairs and got ready for the day.
Where was everyone? I began to complain.

I wished for less of a "to-do" other years, telling my family to relax.
Isn't this what I wanted? Were all those thoughts insane?

Slowly, I walked down the stairs with nothing but my thoughts.
The phone began to scream, just in time to save my mind.

I glanced into the mirror, by the phone, as I picked the receiver up.
It was my youngest of three, calling to say "Happy Father's Day!" How kind.

For almost an entire morning, I had wondered where my children could be.
It was the reflection that reminded me...my kids were all grown and on their own.

The next call was my eldest, indeed, letting me know he's coming at 3:00 p.m..
Instantly, I was grateful for all the love and appreciation I was shown.
