DADT Law May Be Appealed in the Near Future-Vote Yes to Repeal and Stop the Discrimination

It is time for Congress to change the laws regarding the Military Don't Ask Don't Tell Policy (DADT)

I read the story first on CNS News. A story published on 5/25/2010, written by Pete Winn, titled "said thatWhite House, Congressional Dems Reach Agreement to Force Vote on Repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell"

Sens. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Carl Levin (D-Mich.), along with Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Pa.) sent a letter to the White House on Monday announcing that they had "developed a legislative proposal for consideration" by the House and Senate -- one that puts a process in place to repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell once a Defense Department working group studying the policy "has completed its review" and the president, the secretary of Defense, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff "certify that repeal can be achieved consistent with the military's standards of readiness, effectiveness, unit cohesion, and recruiting and retention."(CNS News)

Where do GLBT's belong?

In the streets? In back rooms? At home, unemployed? In corporate America and Wall Street? Why not the military? I'm not sure what review needs to be done, but if corporate America can't discriminate against sex, then why should the military? http://www.equalrights.org/publications/kyr/sexdiscrim.asp

Anti-discriminatory laws cover many things

The United States has laws and regulations designed to protect minorities; we have anti-discrimination laws. Laws to protect Veterans, laws to protect older people from discrimination, and we have laws that protect people from DNA discrimination, passed in 2008. We are not supposed to discriminate against people based upon their disabilities, their gender, their race, their religion, their political persuasion, their sexuality or because of where they were born.

Some information about the Intersexed - Intersex can be divided into four categories:

• 46, XX Intersex
• 46, XY Intersex
• True Gonadal Intersex
• Complex or Undetermined Intersex

One or two in one thousand births receive surgery to correct or "normalize" genitalia (Frequency). Chances are someone in your lifetime has been affected. But it is a dark secret that people don't talk about.

One out of 5000 people is born inter-sexed, meaning that they have physical characteristics of both a female and a male on some level, be it physical characteristics, chromosomal, or a combination. How do we judge? By behavior, by internal or external sexual organs, by dna, or by chromoses?

Sometimes something happens with development within the womb and other times, there are genetic disorders. This isn't anything new but people don't talk about it. Those that are born that way don't fit into what society has deemed "normal".

It's not a secret; it's just something not talked about

Most medical personnel in pediatrics and urology, and obstetrics are trained to look for some of the signs, but the research and awareness oesn't stop there. My question is how can we discount or deny that people are being born this way every day?

Mothers that were given Progestin to stop contractions, may have babies born that born with hyposadias.

(Reference - Oct. 6, 2005 -- Maternal progestin use during pregnancy increases the risk of hypospadias, according to the results of a population-based study published in the October issue of the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.)

What do we really know about emotional and physical development and genetic disorders?

There is very little information available for free on the internet about a developing baby's emotional or mental development. Can it be assumed that if physical development is disrupted, and physical disorders are evident, isn't it possible mental development is also affected? Maybe sometimes mental development is arrested even before signs of physical anamolies make themselves evident.

Who wouldn't want you to know that?

If these physical characteristics are visible and obvious, and undeniable factual, why is it so hard to believe that there are people who don't fit the cookie cutter mold of "strict male" or "strict female" attributes, mentally or emotionally? We are in denial and why, I'm just not sure.

In my opinion, the whole boy vs. girl thing has really go t to change, because there is a lot more to it than that.

If Senator's Lieberman and Carl Levin are after the truth, and are ready to acknowledge diversity, then they have my support.

It is high time we stop the discrimination against GLBTs that for the most part, end up living secret lives, feeling like they are worthless and not accepted by society. Our military should be proud to be all that it can be, and that includes diversity of race, gender, religion, and personalities as it is what will make us stronger. The laws are for all people, no matter the mix.
