Are You Slave or Free?

Benjamin Ira Mikell
At first glance, you may be wondering why I have chosen the above title for this article. Furthermore, your first impression might be in reference to thinking that you will be reading a study on slavery and freedom in American history. You might even find it offensive before reading this article all the way through.

The intention of this article is to encourage us to take a moment out of our day in order to examine our lives and see whether or not we are living in such a way that is pleasing to our Creator. The type of life we choose to live indicates whether we are a slave to the world of sin or a child of God serving Christ to the best of our ability.

When we give into the sinful desires of the flesh, whether it is drugs, abuse of prescription drugs, adultery, abortion, homosexuality, lesbianism, gambling, alcohol, etc., and continue in that lifestyle, we are, in a sense, slaves of sin. Therefore, the Master we serve is Satan. This lifestyle is not only dangerous, but also will cause us to be kept out of Heaven eternally.

If you are currently involved in these types of activities, free yourself by saying no, come to Christ, find new friends, and live a life that is pleasing to God. Being free does not mean freedom to do whatever you want. It means being free from the temptations and burdens that these sins bring into your life and have a negative effect upon those around you who truly care about you.

In order to obtain that freedom, you need to simply hear the word of God, believe that it is truth, repent of your sins, confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and be baptized for the remission of your sins. After you have done this, you are a child of God, a Christian. You have been given a "new lease on life," a "clean slate," etc.

Living as a Christian means we must never return to the former lifestyle of sin that God has forgiven you for participating in. We must not do as Lot's wife did when she disobeyed God when she turned and looked back as Sodom and Gomorrah were being destroyed. God is not saying we do not have a choice in the matter. Rather, He is saying that in order to be pleasing to Him and, eventually live eternally with Him in Heaven, we need to live a life of righteousness.

Furthermore, when He created us in our mother's womb, we were innocent, pure, and free from the temptations and effects of sin. After we were born and grew through childhood and into adulthood, we had made mistakes and fallen under the influence of sin as a result of faulty thinking and making bad decisions. Let us make it clear here that our fall is of our own choosing, not what some say is the inheriting of sin at birth as a result of Adam and Eve's sin.

To conclude this daily devotional, let me ask you: Are you slave or free? If you are slave to sin, do not wait until it is too late to change. If you are free from sin, keep working hard and to the best of your ability according to the teachings of the word of God to keep your life from being entangled with the temptations of the world.
