Daily Dose Extra: Oscar 'Envelope Envy'

New Design for Envelope

Tim O'Brien
AND THE OSCARS GO TO ...LATEST NEWS - - envelopes - - first time ever they have been specially designed for Oscar. That honor went to Marc Friedland, and his comment was "It was dream come true." Plus, he noted that since the envelope is as much a part of the show because of the "And the Oscar goes to..." instead of the winner is... "it is an honor" indeed. You see, every nominee's name is listed as a winner then packed into an envelope. In fact, each has three envelopes. The third is in a vault near the stage. Yes, you read that correctly - - three envelopes for each nominee. The others are destroyed once the winners names are announced. This is why the Pricewaterhouse folk were on hand on the carpet with the designer. And thus, they explained this to us and me. These envelopes will be the perfect keepsake now that they are designed specifically for this year's show. A new tradition has been born. Because of this Friedland said, "past Oscar winners may have envelope envy." You will see that term after this year's show because he said it many times, so let's put it in a headline. To make sure and put the rest the urban legend that at times (Marisa Tomei) name was called but it was not on the envelope. NOT TRUE, they insist. In fact, when the presenter is given the card to read on stage, the winners name is omitted from the teleprompter. Oscars were not on envelopes until 1941 and again, this is first time they were designed for the show.
