Daily Dose of Nonsense: No Nonsense; Oscar Picks

'King' Will Reign

Tim O'Brien
Can there be a split this year between Best Director and Best Film? I wouldn't mind that, to be honest, but it is rare.
Best PIcture:
Tim's Pick: "The King's Speech"
Who Should Win: "The King's Speech"
Early on "The Social Network" had the edge but not any more. "King" has it all - - story, war, overcoming difficulties and a royal feel. If "Social" wins it means a dated movie about social media will be highlighted. I do not think they really want that to happen.
Best Director
Tim's PIck: Tom Hooper, "The King's Speech"
Who Should WIn: David Fincher, "The Social Network"
When I look at the job Fincher did it stood out more because he took a boring story about social media and made it come to life. So, the split spread the wealth.
Best Actor
Tim's PIck: Colin Firth, "The King's Speech"
Who Should WIn: Colin Firth
Jeff Bridges won recently, as did the Coen brothers, so it's not likely they win again. Oscar doesn't really care for someone winning back-to-back, right?
Best Actress
Tim's PIck: Natalie Portman, "Black Swan"
Who Should Win: Natalie Portman
If a speech from another awards show can hinder your chances, then maybe, just maybe Annette Bening can win. This is the cream of the crop for categories this year. I have noted that actress will be a great one - - and it is.
Best Supporting Actor
Tim's PIck: Christian Bale, "The Fighter"
Who Should Win: Christian Bale
Hollywood loves boxing movies and apparently so do we. "Rocky" won Best PIcture.
Best Supporting Actress
Tim's Pick: Melissa Leo, "The Fighter"
Who Should WIn: Melissa Leo
The supporting categories are early on so if "The King's Speech" nabs any of these, look out.
Best Original Screenplay
Tim's Pick: "Inception," Christoper Nolan
Who Should WIn: "Inception"
I look at it this way. Nolan got snubbed in the Best Director category so he can pick up an Oscar for this one. Plus, original all the way.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Tim's Pick: "The Social Network," Aaron Sorkin
Who Should Win: "The Social Network"
Again, a boring story brought to life off the page.
Best Animated Feature
Tim's Pick: "Toy Story 3"
Who Should WIn: "Toy Story 3"
Seriously, it's in the Best Picture category for crying out loud. If it doesn't win this, why is it there?
