Daily Graphic Designer Freebie

Phebe A. Durand
There is, possibly, no bigger hurdle to cross as a designer in any of the fields that I work than the font hurdle. Just one font, a single typeface, and such a huge difference is made in the overall look of the design.

During the 30+ hours I spend each week on the Internet research and doing actual work (forgetting nerdy entertainment), the number of absolutely too-cool finds I run across for designers could easily fill a series of books.

Every weekday, I post the best free tutorials, resources, tips, tricks, and so on for fellow designers. Nothing is off-limits; we're talking everything from icon sets to fonts, vectors to brushes, textures and patterns and layered PSD files.

You are welcome to share more freebies in the comments - please keep them on-topic, though. Do you want to be the first to know when the latest freebies and articles are posted? Graphic Designer Freebie: Titillium Sans-Serif Font

Seriously, having a font that perfectly complements the 'feel' of the design you're creating is so important it can't be stressed enough. Entire books are written on the subject of typography, and as graphic designers we take entire courses dedicated to the way fonts affect design.

Titillium is an absolutely stunning, super-clean, perfectly legible academic font that just happens to be free for all uses. Originally created as an experiment of 'collective design process', this font was created with the intention that users could modify and republish their version of the typeface ... but designers are finding it perfect as-is.

Extremely well-suited to corporate identity and branding design, Titillium also makes for beautifully readable magazines and looks super sharp as headlines in corporate websites as well as body text in how-to books. The typeface itself is available in a variety of text weights including text (normal) version, title (semi-bold) version, extra-black (bold) version, and a very heavy but super-legible full version. Each version downloads separately, and extra-black and italic versions are coming soon.

Freebie Type: Font / Typeface (sans-serif)

The Numbers: 4 Separate .otf and .vfb font files in varying sizes

Usage Limitations: None

• Creator: Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino

To download the font, just stop by the dedicated Titillium page for more information and the free download links.

Fonts are fun, especially for us who like to work in calligraphy as well. Thanks for the tip.
