And definitely Not Greg.
So often do people ask if that's
the name of our second dog
I think she may believe
she has a middle name:
Not Greg.
To Dharma,
she is only "the second dog"
the same age but adopted 6 months later.
Ten years later, to Dharma
she is still the interloper, an unneeded
unwanted addition.
I use the second dog's name
like a bribe
when Dharma ignores me.
She runs to investigate,
to be certain her unworthy sibling
is not the recipient of undeserved
praise or treats.
I have explained to her
often
I got the second dog
for her!
Intended as a playmate, a companion,
an exercise partner, a running mate,
because I traveled too much
and playdates with neighbor's dogs
were too infrequent.
My reasoning doesn't interest Dharma.
I have failed in my duty.
Her eyes condemn "How could you -
how could anyone - need more than her?"
She is dog enough for this world
and convinced, past my daily declarations,
it is impossible
to love more than one dog.
