she lives in the shadow
of the first
brilliant and beautiful
love
never mind that the first
marriage ended badly
broken promises, betrayal
lost innocence (and data).
Pity the second wife
she will never be
fast enough, good enough
she will never be
trusted.
(optional postscript stanza)
My second wife: a laptop rebuilt
and bought secondhand, unnamed
until I labeled her Lil Suzie
after the Everley Brothers song
"Wake up, Little Susie."
because it was a gentler way to revive her
than "Don't even think it, b#tch!"
My first wife: my very first laptop.
Shiny, new, exciting. Expensive.
I bought cars for less.
I called her Baby Grrl
and named all her drives and accessories
after jewelry and body piercings
she could adorn herself with.
Baby Grrl ate poetry like cornflakes
--right out of the box.
She had mother(b#@rd) issues
no professional could cure.
Our marriage couldn't outlast
the warranty. I couldn't afford
or forgive her pretty tantrums.

Very creative! I especially enjoy the last two lines, "Our marriage couldn't outlast
the warranty. I couldn't afford or forgive her pretty tantrums."
