Daily Poetry Challenge: Martina Gets Served

G.L. Morrison
As a young player

I watched Martina hungrily

wished for her racket

and Susie Chapstick

as my doubles partner.

In a game where

Love means nothing

Martina scores

a legendary novelist

a socialite

or two

(more groupies

than games won)

then spends as much time

in court

as on it.

  • Navratilova was partnered with best-selling lesbian author Rita Mae Brown in the 80s.
  • Breakup with Toni Layton (after 8 years) & fractured settlement negotiations are this week's news.
In 1981, Navratilova and Judy Nelson had an affair. Judy was then married to a wealthy male doctor; Martina to Rita Mae Brown. The affair ended both marriages. In 1992, after the breakup with Martina, Judy began a relationship with Rita Mae Brown.

Excellent poem. I loved Martina, and Crissy too.
