How to Check Out Your Day Through Your Higher Self

Marianne Pelletier
I have read tarot cards for years and I do a daily tarot reading to see how things are. Sometimes there are warnings and sometimes there is good news coming. Here are the steps to do your own tarot divination every day.

1. Get a tarot deck. Larger bookstores carry them, and you can browse them. Choose one that comes with its own book, a big one that dedicates a page to each major arcana card (the ones with the Roman numerals). Choose the deck that is most attractive to you. It is calling you.

2. Get a notebook. You'll record your daily readings so that you can look back later and figure out what the cards meant. This is helpful to me, as I often look for what I want instead of paying attention to what they say.

3. Do the reading. There are two formations that I suggest; use them as you need them:
a. three cards - past, present, future
b. four cards - physical self, emotional self, mental self and spiritual self (I got this one from Vicki Noble, see the resources)

Here are the steps to the cards: Shuffle the cards and think about your day ahead of you or behind you. Try to focus on whatever is important to you. When you feel done or feel impatient, set the deck face down. Use your non-dominant hand (left hand if you're right handed, right hand if you're left handed) to cut the cards twice to the left.

For the three card reading, turn a card over on each pile and read it. For the four card reading, choose a pile and turn over four cards, laying them down bottom to top. When you turn a card, turn it right to left; do not flip it over.

Your book will tell you what the meaning is. For instance, an ace of cups in the physical location (bottom of the four card reading) means that you are sexually attracted to the new person that you've been dating, but the ace of cups in the emotional location (second one up) indicates that you have met a new love.

Recording every day in your notebook helps you go back later and see how the cards played out in your life. Also, you will notice trends.

  • Pick a tarot deck that's attractive to you.
  • Use a notebook to see the trends and to compare later.
  • Turn cards from left to right. Do not flip them over -- that changes the meaning.
The Fool is the only 0 card in the deck, and stands for someone starting anew completely -- open, willing to learn, and fascinated with everything. It became the joker in regular playing cards.
