Dale Spender: An Amazing Author

Katie D
Dale Spender was born in 1943 in Newcastle, Wales. She attended the Burwood High School for Girls in Sydney, Australia. Her earliest claim to fame was being a Miss Kodak girl. Before writing, in the 1960's, she was an English Literature teacher at Dapto High School. In 1974 she began lecturing at James Cook University. Spencer is the niece of famed crime writer Jean Spender (1901-1970). She was the oldest of three children; two girls and a boy.

She published her first book, Man Made Language, in 1980. In 1991 she published The Diary of Elizabeth of Pepys.

Other than writing, Spender is the co-originator of the Women's International Knowledge Encyclopedia and Data (WIKED). She founded the Athene Series and Pandora Press. She is the associate editor of the Great Women Series and commissioning editor of the Penguin Australian Women's Library.

She is now focused on areas outside of literature, including intellectual rights. She is primarily focused on new wealth, or creating information products, and new learning, or learning technologically rather than from books. She was Director of Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) in Australia for 9 years.

Spender's main focus in life and literature is feminism and women's rights. The Diary of Elizabeth of Pepys is a spoof concerning women's rights in the late 1700's. She has a special interest and is involved with the Second Chance Programme, an organization that helps homeless women in Australia.
