The negotiations are completed and the football season will take place. Although, the Dallas Cowboys have issues with their salary cap that must be eradicated before they can get the talent they desire on their roster. In an attempt to free up that salary cap, the Dallas Cowboys have decided to cut four of their veterans and release them to free agency. The four individuals in questions are running back Marion Barber, receiver Roy Williams, right guard Leonard Davis, and right tackle Marc Colombo.
While the performance of such players as Marion Barber has only led to some stunning wins and amazing plays, the team finds that being able to carry their extravagant salaries is far above what they are able to meet. Newer rookie players are willing to sign for a significantly lower price with fewer perks. Barber was a hard charger that picked up numerous short yardage stints. Although losing him frees up over 5 million in salary cap space.
Roy Williams is another veteran that not only did not produce the results that were expected, he also cost the team numerous draft picks and they had to agree to an out of the box 45 million dollar deal. The team expected Williams to be a mover and shaker that would help turn around their losing percentage. In reality what Williams gave the team was 84 passes caught in 40 games with thirteen touchdowns and a total of 1,324 yards. While this would have been fantastic if it had been in one season, this was the results after two and a half seasons.
Leonard Davis is hitting the older end of the spectrum at 33 years old. The right guard was unremarkable in his performance and the team felt he was just not worth 6 million to keep. The argument stands that the franchise felt Davis' performance was seriously slipping. No reason for the slippage had been offered, but the team felt that in freeing up the 6 million on the salary cap would be beneficial in attaining fresh talent.
Finally, right tackle Marc Colombo went through many negotiations in order to try to retain his position with the team. The bottom line was that he just did not want to give on a salary reduction of any kind. The news came on Tuesday morning of the cut, but after a change of heart by Colombo negotiations have recommenced. To date, Marc Colombo is still on the roster with negotiations still in the process.
